Position Overview
Applications are invited for the full‑time post of Consultant Hepatologist which forms part of the reconfiguration of Gastroenterology & Hepatology services within Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. The successful candidate will join 16 other Consultants in Gastroenterology / Hepatology in Cardiff. The post is based at University Hospital of Wales (UHW) but may also have some duties at University Hospital Llandough. The two hospital sites are located approximately six miles apart although Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endoscopy across both sites are managed in a single directorate within the Clinical Board of Medicine. Although this post is full‑time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.
Employment Details
Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview. You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary range for this post is £110,240 per annum to £160,951 per annum. Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.
Key Responsibilities
- Join the Hepatology team of 4.5 other Consultants, supported by specialist nurses and specialty registrars as well as colleagues in interventional radiology and HPB surgery.
- Provide out‑of‑hours emergency endoscopy and weekend cover for Gastroenterology and Hepatology patients as part of a rota with colleagues.
- Participate in a rota for in‑patient care during weekdays.
- Support the reconfiguration of services across two hospital sites managed within a single directorate.
Qualifications & Experience
- Specialist Register membership or Specialist Registrar status within six months of expected CCT.
- Demonstrated clinical competence in hepatology and gastroenterology.
- Experience in service reconfiguration and multidisciplinary teamwork.
- Strong referral and communication skills for a high‑volume, high‑complexity service.
