Overview

Consultant Geriatrician to support a comprehensive service for older patients at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, part of the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

The role involves front‑door interface care, acute frailty pathways, orthogeriatric liaison and community outreach.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care for inpatients or older adults referred to front door frailty teams.
  • Perform administrative duties related to patient care.
  • Contribute to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activities, supporting allied health professionals.
  • Regularly participate in departmental and directorate meetings.
  • Provide cover for consultant colleagues during leave and in emergency situations.
  • Commit to appropriate evening and weekend on‑call duties for acute medicine and specialty services.
  • Be managerially accountable through Clinical Service Leads to the Clinical Director Group Medical Director.
  • Deliver educational and clinical supervision to resident doctors and other health professionals.
  • Participate in departmental and Trust‑wide teaching programmes for resident medical staff and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Lead research and development projects to improve patient experience and service quality.
  • Support policy and strategy development as a senior member of the Directorate Management Team.
  • Contribute to the development of services under the direction of Clinical Service Leads and the Medical Director.
  • Develop and lead front‑door interface services, including acute frailty pathways, orthogeriatric liaison, community outreach and rapid‑access GP clinics.

Qualifications

  • MRCP or equivalent.
  • Specialist registration in Geriatric or General Medicine, or within 6 months of completing a Certificate of Completion in Training (CCT) in Geriatrics.
  • Valid entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) register.
  • Experience or interest in front‑door geriatrics, peri‑operative or orthogeriatric care, and falls management.
