The post‑holder will manage a caseload and deal with a wide range of health needs in a primary care setting, ensuring the highest standards of care for all registered and temporary patients.

Clinical responsibilities include

  • Surgery consultations as per practice timetable
  • Telephone consultations and queries
  • Home visits to patients
  • Checking and signing repeat prescriptions
  • Handling queries, paperwork and correspondence in a timely fashion
  • Making professional, autonomous decisions regarding presenting problems, whether self‑referred or referred by other health‑care workers
  • Assessing health‑care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems
  • Screening patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness
  • Developing care plans in consultation with patients and in line with current practice disease‑management protocols
  • Providing counselling and health education
  • Admitting or discharging patients to and from the caseload and referring to other care providers as appropriate
  • Recording clear and contemporaneous consultation notes to agreed standards
  • Collecting data for audit purposes
  • Compiling and issuing computer‑generated acute and repeat prescriptions (avoiding hand‑written prescriptions whenever possible)
  • Prescribing in accordance with the practice prescribing formulary (or generically) whenever clinically appropriate
  • Undertaking all normal duties and responsibilities associated with a GP working within primary care
  • Policy and Compliance
  • Awareness of and compliance with all relevant practice policies and guidelines, e. g. prescribing, confidentiality, data protection, health and safety
  • Commitment to life‑long learning and audit to ensure evidence‑based best practice
  • Contributing to evaluation/audit and clinical standard setting within the organisation
  • Assisting in the development of computer‑based patient records, summarising patient records and read‑coding data
  • Attending training and events organised by the practice or other agencies where appropriate

  • Respect patients' privacy and act appropriately to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Disclose information only to authorised persons in accordance with practice policies and procedures involving personal and sensitive data

  • Implement and lead on a full range of health and safety and infection control measures as defined in policy, manual and procedures
  • Use personal protective equipment correctly and ensure others' appropriate use
  • Maintain and monitor practice facilities and equipment for hygiene and cleanliness
  • Manage sharps, waste and instrument disposal correctly and maintain a sterile environment
  • Provide periodic infection control training (minimum twice annually)
  • Report and address health and safety hazards promptly and escalations where necessary

Qualifications

  • MBBS/MBCh B or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council with a licence to practise
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in General Practice or equivalent, or be on the GP Register
  • Additional postgraduate qualifications (e. g. Diploma in Child Health, Family Planning, Minor Surgery)
  • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP/FRCGP)

Experience and Skills

  • Experience of working in UK General Practice
  • Competent in managing a wide range of acute and chronic conditions
  • Experience using electronic clinical record systems, including EMIS Web or other GP clinical systems
  • Experience in teaching, training or supervising learners
  • Experience in leadership, service development or quality improvement projects

Miriam Primary Care Group (MPCG) is a salaried GP position within a progressive, high‑performing practice that values teamwork and professional development.

The practice operates across two sites—Miriam Medical Centre, Laird Street, Birkenhead, and Earlston Medical Centre, 1‑3 Earlston Road, Wallasey—and will incorporate a third site from 1 April 2027.

With an approximately 16,500 patient list, the practice is rated "Good" over all areas by the Care Quality Commission, a high QOF achiever, and users of EMIS Web.

MPCG is an active member of the Arno and North Coast Alliance Primary Care Network and provides additional services such as minor surgery/joint injections to registered patients and those across Wirral.
