Independent Prescriber in Barnsley

Overview

We are looking for an Independent Prescriber with a nursing or pharmacy background and an Independent Prescriber qualification to deliver drug and alcohol clinical and prescribing services within our Substance Misuse team in Barnsley Recovery Steps.

Responsibilities

• Conduct clinical assessments and prescribe medications, including controlled drugs, to support recovery in line with national and organisational guidelines.
• Provide prescribing information and advice to pharmacists, shared care GPs, and hospital staff.
• Undertake service‑user centred assessments, care planning, monitoring, evaluation and reviews in practice and outreach settings.
• Manage blood borne virus (BBV) risk assessment, pre‑ and post‑test counselling, testing and immunisation.
• Deliver health promotion and harm reduction interventions covering safer sex, contraception, nutrition and healthy living.
• Administer immunisation against hepatitis B in line with national guidance.
• Maintain and coordinate the client clinical database, ensuring data security and compliance with internal and external service requirements.
• Assist with supervised dispensing and prescription queries and coordinate with pharmacists.
• Share care with GPs for service users in Primary Care Extended Services (PCES) / Primary Care Recovery Services (PCRS).
• Deliver clinical interventions across hubs and provide outreach as required.
• Participate in continuing professional development, clinical supervision, performance appraisals and training.
• Work in accordance with relevant legislation, best practice policies, procedures and guidelines, including the Humankinds clinical governance policy framework.
• Participate in the audit process, implement findings and report serious incidents, ensuring service change when required.
• Disseminate learning across the service and organisation, supporting other Humankind substance misuse services during mobilisation.
• Collaborate on clinical governance, policy review and implementation.
• Support national and local research projects and keep abreast of policy and professional development in the field.

Qualifications

• Independent Prescriber qualification (RCGP Level 1, Level 2 or willingness to work towards Level 2).
• First‑level registered nurse or registered pharmacist.
• Experience working within substance misuse (desirable).
• Proficient in Microsoft Outlook and Office programmes.
• Experience entering complex information onto an electronic/clinical database.
• Experience delivering evidence‑based treatments in substance misuse.
• Previous experience carrying out general health care assessments including BBV and delivering health promotion/harm reduction interventions.
• Awareness of social context of drug misuse and wider implications.
• Understanding of primary health care complexities, constraints and opportunities.
• Awareness and experience of audit principles.
• Knowledge of drug misuse services available in public and voluntary sectors.
• Understanding of national strategies impacting on drug and alcohol services and the role of the Independent Prescriber.
• Understanding of private vs public sector roles and responsibilities.
