Apprentice Dispenser

A 12‑month apprenticeship that provides full training to safely and accurately dispense medicines while completing the nationally recognised Buttercups NVQ Level 2 Dispensing Assistant Qualification.

Key Responsibilities

• Dispensing duties: Assist in the safe preparation, selection, assembly, and labelling of prescriptions under supervision; process repeat and Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) prescriptions; maintain accurate dispensing records; highlight prescription queries to a qualified dispenser.
• Patient care and customer service: Provide a professional, courteous, patient‑centred service; assist patients with medication collection and routine enquiries; communicate effectively with patients, carers and health‑care professionals; signpost patients to the appropriate team member.
• Stock management: Order, receive, store and rotate pharmaceutical stock; monitor stock levels and expiry dates; maintain appropriate storage conditions for cold‑chain medicines; support medicines recalls and disposal of expired items.
• Administrative duties: Use EMIS Web and dispensing systems safely and effectively; maintain accurate patient, prescription and stock records; assist with filing, scanning and other dispensary administration; support audits and quality‑improvement activities; keep the dispensary clean, safe and organised.
• Compliance and development: Participate in audits, competency assessments, continuous professional development and DSQS quality‑improvement activities; uphold confidentiality, health‑safety regulations and all Practice policies and SOPs.

Qualifications and Training

• GCSE grade 4/C or above in English and Mathematics (or equivalent).
• Willingness to undertake the Buttercups NVQ Level 2 Dispensing Assistant Qualification and complete all mandatory training within the 12‑month programme.
• Participation in structured workplace training, competency assessments, mandatory refresher training, and continuous professional development.

Essential Skills & Knowledge

• Excellent communication, organisational and attention‑to‑detail skills.
• IT proficiency and ability to work effectively with computerised record systems.
• Capacity to maintain confidentiality and work within multidisciplinary teams.
• Commitment to high standards of patient care, health safety and quality improvement.

Desirable Criteria

• Previous healthcare, pharmacy, retail or customer‑service experience.
• Knowledge of the NHS and Primary Care services.
• Experience with computerised record systems.
• Ability to speak Welsh (Welsh speakers are equally welcome).

Location

Rural practice in Llanfairpwll, Anglesey – 8,200‑patient GP practice with two surgeries and a supportive team environment. EMIS clinical system is used.
