Barker Ross are currently supporting the recruitment of a Shift Engineer on behalf of a market leading organisation within the food manufacturing and co‑packing sector. The Role

As a Shift Engineer, you will play a key role in ensuring the smooth running of production machinery and site operations, supporting both planned and reactive maintenance activities across the facility. This position is particularly suited to a mechanically biased engineer with strong fault‑finding and breakdown repair experience across production and packing machinery. The business is looking for someone who enjoys being hands‑on in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment and can respond effectively to machine breakdowns to minimise downtime. You will work closely with Production and Operations teams to improve machine performance, maintain technical standards and support overall operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Providing engineering support across the production operation
  • Carrying out planned preventative maintenance
  • Responding to machinery breakdowns and production repairs
  • Diagnosing and resolving mechanical faults on production equipment
  • Monitoring machinery and ancillary plant equipment
  • Completing machine inspections and maintenance tasks
  • Supporting machine change‑overs when required
  • Identifying opportunities for continuous improvement
  • Assisting with colleague training and development
  • Maintaining high standards of housekeeping and safe working practices
  • Supporting operational teams to ensure production targets are achieved
  • Completing scheduled engineering work to restore machinery to required standards
  • Participating in weekend overtime where business needs require

What We Are Looking For

  • Previous engineering experience within manufacturing or production environments
  • Mechanically biased engineer with strong breakdown and fault‑finding capability
  • Experience working on production, packaging or automated machinery
  • Food manufacturing experience would be advantageous
  • Completed engineering apprenticeship desirable
  • Good understanding of health and safety procedures
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Strong communication and problem‑solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Flexible approach with a strong work ethic
