We work in all hours, and through all weathers, ensuring our customers are never without power. Within Operations, the Strategic Investment Group is a focused team that design and deliver a wide range of construction projects within the UK. The team specialises in the design and construction of electrical projects on its distribution networks ranging from 6.6kV to 132kV.
As a Senior Protection and Control Engineer you will be involved in the design of protection and control schemes at voltages from 6.6kV to 132kV across the Southern Distribution Network. You'll develop a project design from an initial high level scope, through to detailed scheme drawings and relay settings. This includes plant specifications, tendering and tender evaluation.
To ensure you get the most from your role, and our customers receive the highest standard of service, we ask that you have the following to join us:
- A minimum HNC in Electrical Engineering, degree level is preferred
- A minimum of seven years previous experience working in power system protection covering design, commissioning and fault investigation.
- Previous experience of working on Distribution Networks as a Protection & Control Design Engineer. This should include experience at 6.6kV to 132kV.
- Knowledge and experience of protection relays and relay panels, CT & VT sizing calculations, protection relay setting calculations and the producing of detailed and accurate drawings including main connection and protection diagrams. Complete detail design including but not limited to AC and DC Schematic Diagrams etc.
- An interest in long term development in order to identify and implement innovative and effective business improvements.
- Ability to support and guide other members of team.
- Review Protection & Control Designs developed by third parties on the 6.6kV to 132kV Network to be installed for the client.
Whilst the above skills and experience are important, we also have several personal competencies that we look for in our future employees:
- High regard for safety, embedding yourself in our safety culture and adhering to guidelines in everything you do is a key priority
- Outstanding customer relationship skills, and a commitment to providing a high level service at all times
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable liaising with stakeholders at all levels, both internal and external
- Regular travel is required and as a result we can only accept applications from candidates that hold a current driving license

- Sound knowledge of IT, namely Microsoft packages including Word, Excel and Outlook; a flair for picking up new IT systems is a great advantage
- Integrate as one of a larger protection team interacting with design / delivery colleagues in Strategic Investment, and staff in Regions.
- Enthusiasm and drive with a flexible approach to work and an ability to adapt to changing business and project priorities.
