Hampshire County Council are looking for an Arboriculture Specialist to carry out proactive and reactive tree inspections throughout the Hampshire Highway Authority network, including tree survey and report writing, and tree planting site validation.

As part of this role, the candidate should expect to carry out work within the following areas:

  • Provide professional, accurate advice to line manager, County and District members, and in-house staff.
  • Attend countywide sites to assess tree condition and necessary works and advise intentions.
  • Instruct works to our tree contractors.
  • Manage own site inspection workloads.
  • Advise on development schemes, S278, S38, and planning applications.
  • Remain up to date with current industry legislation and practices.
  • Maintain good communication between the Client and contractors.
  • Meet project deadlines and provide accurate and proportionate arboricultural advice.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Level 4 Diploma in Arboriculture or equivalent experience.
  • Arboricultural Association Technicians Certificate, or equivalent (or working towards this).
  • Arboriculture experience, with particular experience in tree work or planting, together with relevant practical experience.
  • Practical knowledge of tree biology and structure, plant identification, tree pests and diseases, law in relation to Highway trees, planting practices and standards, arboricultural costings, the environmental impact of and on trees, and awareness of current issues.
  • Competent IT user.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including report writing.
  • Understanding of contract documentation and management.

Decision Making Areas:

  • Prioritising and managing own workload, set by senior Arboriculture officer(s).
  • Accurate and consistent arboricultural report preparation.
  • Ability to use own initiative.
  • Dealing with upset, angry, or abusive stakeholders, contractors, or members of the public verbally and in writing.

Working Conditions:

  • Hybrid working (mixture of working at home and in the office), with frequent visits to live sites.
  • Communicating with colleagues, stakeholders, and contractors in a challenging environment.
  • Ability to fulfil the travel requirements of the role.
