Customs Compliance Specialist
Location: Farnborough
Contract: 6 months (inside IR35) (likely extension/potential permanent)
Rate of Pay: £40ph umbrella or £29.89ph PAYE
Role Overview
A leading innovator in high-altitude aerospace technology is seeking a detail-oriented Customs Compliance Specialist to support the compliant and efficient movement of goods across international borders. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a pioneering organisation at the forefront of solar-electric aviation and global connectivity solutions.
You will collaborate with cross-functional teams and external partners to manage import/export processes, classify shipments, and maintain accurate compliance records.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement global customs compliance processes.
- Deliver in-person training on customs topics to internal teams.
- Accurately classify products using Harmonised Tariff Schedule (HTS) codes.
- Review and classify inbound shipments to ensure accurate customs declarations.
- Track packaging data for UK Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) reporting.
- Obtain necessary regulatory clearances, including Type Approval Certificates.
- Create SOPs for customs brokers and third-party logistics providers.
- Manage temporary shipments to avoid double duty payments.
- Liaise with customs brokers in the UK and Kenya to ensure proper documentation and procedures.
- Coordinate with export teams to secure licences and clearances.
- Reconcile quoted duties with actual payments in collaboration with finance and tax teams.
- Validate purchase orders related to duty and customs payments.
- Maintain accurate records of import/export licences and manage renewals.
- Act as the primary contact for customs-related queries between internal teams and external brokers.
- Stay up to date with customs regulations and best practices.
- Ensure accurate export and customs compliance data is maintained in the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tool.
- Support logistics in maintaining an accurate and current Product Matrix.
Experience & Qualifications
- Degree in International Trade Compliance, Customs, Business, or equivalent experience.
- Proven experience in customs compliance or international trade.
- Strong knowledge of HTS codes, import/export regulations, and customs procedures.
- Familiarity with Type Approval Certification and licensing requirements.
- Experience working with customs brokers, logistics providers, and regulatory agencies.
- Proficiency in ERP and PLM systems is advantageous.
- International experience, particularly in Kenya, is a plus.
