š Summary of the Role
Weāre seeking an experienced and technically accomplished Lead Engineer to join our Protection & Control team. Youāll be responsible for leading the design and implementation of Protection Systems for major clients across the UKās Transmission and Distribution sector. These projects span greenfield installations, system upgrades, and integration with existing infrastructure.
This is a senior role that blends technical leadership, stakeholder engagement, and strategic delivery. Youāll guide multidisciplinary teams, mentor engineers, and ensure that solutions meet both client expectations and regulatory standards.
š§ Key Responsibilities
- Lead and advise on Protection & Control content across projects, ensuring compliance with relevant standards
- Chair design workshops and review meetings, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders
- Develop system-level designs including SLDs, KLDs, architecture diagrams, and concept-level solutions
- Conduct site visits and non-intrusive surveys to support design validation, tendering, and implementation
- Produce and review technical documentation including Functional Design Specifications, Design Intent Documents, and Compliance Reports
- Lead the development of Protection & Control designs including schematics, general arrangements, layouts, calculations, and schedules
- Support client approval processes and ensure solutions meet all technical and contractual requirements
- Deliver assigned tasks and project milestones on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards
- Provide technical input and feedback to support sales and tendering activities
- Assist project managers with programme planning, change identification, and cost control
- Proactively identify and manage technical risks to ensure smooth project execution
ā Candidate Profile
Weāre looking for someone who brings deep technical expertise and strong leadership qualities:
- Proven experience in UK Transmission & Distribution systems
- Hands-on knowledge of Protection & Control technologies from vendors such as GE, Siemens, SEL, ABB
- Working knowledge of IEC 61850 and its practical implementation
- Understanding of substation communication protocols and cybersecurity design considerations
- Structured and analytical approach to problem-solving
- Ability to lead, collaborate, and motivate multidisciplinary teams
- Excellent communication skills with internal teams and external stakeholders
- Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline (Bachelorās, Masterās, or equivalent)
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel
- Familiarity with National Grid standards and policies (desirable but not essential)
