The Opportunity
We are seeking a Senior Protection & Control Engineer to take a key technical role in delivering major UK Transmission and Distribution projects. You will work across the full project lifecycle—from concept and detailed design through to production, testing, site support and commissioning. This role is ideal for an engineer who is technically strong, delivery‐focused and confident taking ownership of complex engineering tasks. Key Responsibilities
- Protection & Control Engineering
- Produce and review P&C designs and documentation: SLDs, KLDs, schematics, GAs, schedules, calculations, FDS, design intent docs, compliance matrices and test documentation.
- Develop relay settings and support protection coordination studies.
- Prepare relay configurations and files for deployment.
- Conduct relay and bay testing, including client witness testing.
- Apply ENA, BS, IEC and client‐specific standards (e.g., National Grid TP series, DNO standards).
- IEC 61850 & Digital Substations
- Apply IEC 61850 principles including GOOSE messaging and digital substation architectures.
- Support SCL file development and system interface reviews.
- Consider OT cyber security requirements aligned with IEC 62443.
- Project Delivery & Technical Support
- Deliver engineering work packages to agreed time, cost, quality and safety.
- Provide technical input on programme, change control, risk and cost.
- Support installation, testing and commissioning activities.
- Site & Stakeholder Engagement
- Undertake site visits and non‐intrusive surveys.
- Communicate effectively with clients, suppliers and internal teams.
- Support technical workshops, client meetings and design reviews.
Essential Requirements
- Significant experience delivering end‐to‐end P&C engineering solutions in Transmission and/or Distribution.
- Strong understanding of protection philosophies, schemes, HV substation arrangements and system integration.
- Knowledge of ENA, IEC, BS, National Grid TP series and DNO standards.
- Hands‐on experience with GE, Siemens, SEL, Schneider or similar relay platforms.
- Practical experience implementing IEC 61850 (architecture, GOOSE, integration).
- Experience testing P&C solutions using industry‐standard tools.
- Strong documentation, communication and project lifecycle experience.
- Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience).
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel.
Desirable
- Extensive UK T&D P&C engineering experience.
- Advanced IEC 61850 knowledge (SCL, GOOSE, integration testing).
- Awareness of OT cyber security frameworks (IEC 62443, NIS).
- Experience mentoring junior engineers.
- Working towards IEng/CEng.
- Experience contributing to bids and tenders.
