This is an exciting opportunity for a Project Controls Manager to join Associated British Ports (ABP), the UK’s leading and largest ports group, providing essential gateways for trade and enabling green infrastructure essential for the UK’s energy transition. ABP are a major landlord and port operator with 21 port locations in the UK, with 87km of Quay and 5000ha of port estate handling approximately 100 million tonnes of cargo every year. The Major Projects team lead the development and delivery of major port infrastructure projects that directly deliver twin missions of Keeping Britain Trading and Enabling the Energy Transition.
The purpose of this role is to support the Project Controls Lead to enable major capital projects in ABP, ensure governance is adhered to and expenditure is properly managed and reported.
About you:
- Educated to degree level (or equivalent)
- Extensive demonstrable experience working as a Project Controls Manager and in developing and implementing project controls on programmes or portfolios.
- Extensive demonstrable experience working on projects and in the project environment.
- Must have the ability to communicate and prioritise workload effectively, strong organisational skills and time management as well as a high level of professionalism and continuing professional development.
- Hands-on approach with a key focus on critical deliverables.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to understand all functional drivers.
- Strong working knowledge of MS Office suite of programmes including MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel and Visio.
- Proficient in Primavera P6 and Asta PowerProject.
- Strong working knowledge of document management and common data environment software/systems.
- Experience with development of Capital Infrastructure Projects above £20m.
- Hold appropriate professional qualifications in project controls from either APM/IMPA/PMI.
About the role:
- Standardise and embed best-in-class project controls practices across all major projects.
- Lead continual improvement initiatives, incorporating lessons learned and lean project delivery principles.
- Champion consistency across projects in schedule, cost, and risk management practices.
- Set and communicate a clear project controls strategy and culture.
- Lead the upskilling of PMs and project teams in project controls methods, with an emphasis on planning and scheduling.
- Promote ownership and accountability of controls disciplines within each project team.
- Support Project Managers in project initiation using pre-defined templates, tools, and frameworks.
- Work with the PMs to create the WBS, initial schedule, initial cost report, initial risk register and with resource planning.
- Lead the portfolio-level Planning and Scheduling discipline, ensuring quality, consistency, and control of all project schedules.
- Oversee and provide assurance over consultant planners' work; review and validate schedule logic, progress, and forecasting.
- Develop and maintain Integrated Project Schedules (IPS) at portfolio and individual project levels.
- Review and assure consultant-led project controls inputs and deliverables for alignment with portfolio standards and objectives.
