A rare and prestigious opportunity has arisen to join Westminster Abbey as Head of Security, leading the protection of one of the most iconic and historically significant institutions in the world. At the heart of the nation and Commonwealth, Westminster Abbey is not only a working church, but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the setting for major state occasions, including Coronations and national ceremonies. Welcoming over 1.5 million visitors and worshippers each year, the Abbey requires a security function that is both highly effective and aligned with its values of welcome, service, and community.
The Role
As Head of Security, you will provide strategic leadership for all aspects of security across the Abbey and its precincts, protecting staff, residents, worshippers, and visitors 24/7. You will play a key role in planning and delivering security for major national and international events, working closely with senior stakeholders, the police, and external agencies. You will also be a member of the Abbey’s Senior Management Forum, contributing to the wider leadership and strategic direction of the Abbey.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the Abbey’s Security function and team
- Advise the Dean & Chapter and Abbey Board on all security matters
- Oversee risk management, incident response linked to security strategy
- Oversee compliance with counter-terrorism legislation and national guidance
- Build and maintain strong relationships with police and security agencies
- Plan and manage security for high-profile services, events, and State occasions
- Promote a culture of safety that reflects the Abbey’s values of welcome and service
