The Role

As Payroll Manager, you'll take ownership of a busy and varied payroll bureau, managing end-to-end payroll services for a diverse portfolio of clients.

You'll lead and inspire the payroll team, ensure compliance with the latest legislation and continuously look for ways to improve processes and enhance the client experience.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys combining technical payroll expertise with leadership, problem-solving and outstanding customer service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the accurate and timely processing of payrolls for a varied client portfolio.
  • Oversee weekly, fortnightly and monthly payrolls from start to finish.
  • Ensure compliance with current HMRC legislation and payroll best practice.
  • Manage pension auto-enrolment and statutory payments, including SSP, SMP, SPP and SAP.
  • Submit RTI returns and complete year-end payroll processes, including P60s and P11Ds where applicable.
  • Act as the main point of contact for payroll clients, delivering an exceptional level of service.
  • Keep up to date with payroll legislation and implement changes across the bureau.
  • Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes and efficiencies.
  • Lead, mentor and support the payroll team, encouraging continuous development.
  • Build strong relationships with clients and colleagues across the practice.

About You

You'll be an experienced payroll professional with strong technical knowledge and a passion for delivering an outstanding client experience.

You'll ideally have

  • Previous experience managing payroll within an accountancy practice or payroll bureau.
  • Strong leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Excellent knowledge of UK payroll legislation and HMRC requirements.
  • Experience using payroll software such as Paycircle, Sage Payroll or Xero.
  • A proactive approach with excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong organisational and communication skills.
  • The ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • A CIPP qualification (desirable but not essential).
