Capital One is looking for an experienced Software Engineering Manager to lead a team of eight Software Engineers in our Nottingham office, focusing on building and evolving our Data capabilities across the UK business and within our advanced Cloud-based Enterprise Data Ecosystem.

What you’ll do

  • Lead a high-performing data engineering team: Lead and empower eight Software Engineers to deliver high-quality, scalable, resilient data solutions at pace.
  • Champion people leadership and development: Mentor engineers for personal and technical growth, driving a material positive impact on their careers and business influence.
  • Drive technical excellence and architecture: Provide strong technical leadership, maintain a high engineering bar, manage technical risks, and influence architectural direction.
  • Deliver the product roadmap: Own deliveries and ways of working, partnering with Product and Change Delivery to shape the roadmap and ensure timely delivery of valuable data products in a complex regulatory environment.
  • Foster innovation and modern practices: Encourage innovation, advocate for effective use of AI developer tooling - leading by example - and adhering to modern software development patterns and best practices.
  • Forge partnerships: Build strong cross-functional relationships across Data Engineering and the wider UK/US Enterprise to provide the team with clear context and purpose.
  • Platform and application management: Own the team's business applications and platforms. Ensure they remain well-managed, secure, and up-to-date; and provide effective incident support through your team.

What we’re looking for

  • An approachable, inquisitive, problem-solving leader focused on business value and passionate about developing talent.
  • Comfortable with technology, architectural decisions, and technical trade-offs, backed by a previous background as an experienced software engineer.
  • Strong advocacy for AI developer tooling such as: Claude Code, Copilot, Windsurf, and Gemini.
  • Proficiency in delivering solutions within a major Public Cloud service, such as AWS.
  • Experience operating within an Agile environment (e.g. Scrum) in a complex, regulated industry like Financial Services.
  • A strong sense of ownership, excellent communication skills, and a positive, proactive bias for action balanced with self-reflection.

Where and how you'll work

This is a 9 month fixed term position based in our Nottingham office. We have a hybrid working model which gives you flexibility to work from our office and from home. We're big on collaboration and connection, so you'll be based in our Nottingham office 3 days a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
