About the Role
To support the growth of our international businesses, we are seeking an experienced UK lawyer, who will be based in our UK office, to serve on our privacy legal team supporting all lines of business across Capital One’s global footprint. As Senior Counsel, you will help advise Capital One on privacy strategy across the UK and Europe and be a valued member of a growing team. You will spot issues, solve problems, and influence our partners to mitigate legal and regulatory risk in a challenging and rapidly evolving space. This role provides an opportunity to work at a leading financial institution with a long history of using data and technology to build innovative financial products. You will join an experienced team of legal subject-matter experts focusing on privacy and will advise on a wide range of privacy laws. Our team supports many of the most important and strategic initiatives at the company, advising on dynamic and critical data protection issues on all products and services, across all lines of business. We are looking for a teammate who will enter uncharted territory with enthusiasm, curiosity, humility, and good humour.
What you’ll do
- Identify privacy issues in a complex, highly regulated environment, and provide expert legal advice on data protection issues, ensuring compliance with evolving global regulations and industry best practices.
- Communicate privacy legal requirements and risks effectively to legal, business, compliance, and risk partners.
- Develop customer-focused solutions to mitigate privacy risks and achieve business goals.
- Support partners in building technical and organizational privacy controls, drafting privacy notices and disclosures, developing policies and procedures, preparing internal documentation, and enhancing privacy operations and strategy.
- Collaborate with outside counsel, developing written legal guidance and presentations, monitoring legal developments and industry trends, and contributing to the legal privacy team’s existing knowledge and resources.
- Track and advise on privacy legislation and new privacy laws.
The skills and experience you need
- Qualified solicitor with solid post-qualification experience.
- Strong knowledge of privacy laws, regulations, and principles in the United Kingdom and internationally, including DUAA and GDPR.
- Demonstrated experience as a strategic thinker and pragmatic problem-solver who can calibrate risks and synthesise complex legal information.
- Experience building practical, risk-based privacy compliance solutions and advising on policies and procedures at large, multinational companies.
- Excellent communication skills, with an ability to communicate nuanced legal issues to a variety of audiences, interact with senior leadership, and influence business partners.
Where and how you'll work
This is a permanent position based in our London (Hammersmith) office. We embrace a hybrid approach to work. You'll spend three days a week in the office (Tuesday-Thursday), with Monday and Friday being dedicated work-from-home days. Our offices are designed to inspire and support you.
