Software Engineering Manager – Data Operations

About the Role

It’s an exciting time at Capital One UK. We’re on a mission to create our next generation, cloud-based data ecosystem, to unlock the power of data, increase financial inclusion and deliver transformative experiences to our customers.

The Win with Data team owns the data ecosystem. It captures and distributes data in real time, makes sure data is accurate & easy to use, enabling analysis for deep insight backed by the power of a Cloud based data Lake House, scalable machine learning, and powerful data processing, to provide the right data to enable effective Business decisions.

We are seeking a Data Operations Manager to join us on our mission, where you’ll lead a team of Engineers in evolving our capabilities to solve complex problems and unlocking data to help our customers. You will enable the evolution of our Cloud based data ecosystem, shape how we build and create effective data-driven solutions, whilst growing and nurturing a team of talented Engineers.

What you’ll do:

  1. Lead a multi-disciplined team of support and infrastructure engineers, managing, evolving and supporting our cross-platform batch data environments.
  2. Create and embed a positive team culture across all engineers within the team (e.g. curious, mutually challenging, collaborative).
  3. Improve platform quality and efficiency (e.g. improve resiliency, availability, performance, etc.).
  4. Provide technical guidance and coaching for all engineers within your team across all areas of their focus.
  5. Support and grow the productivity of your team, enabling them to rapidly deliver stable service.
  6. Enhance and shape the Engineering and Agile delivery processes within your team to support quality and pace and improvements to the service that can be game changing for the services we offer.
  7. Coach, nurture and develop the associates in your team, supporting their personal and technical growth.
  8. Collaborate with cross-functional peers and Senior Software Engineering managers to ensure the successful delivery of our cross-team deliverables and service targets.
  9. Work with Agile Delivery Leads and Senior Leaders to plan, prioritise, refine and estimate key deliverables across our programs of work.
  10. Identify and escalate challenges and issues with deliverables, supporting the reporting of progress and potential remediation solutions.
  11. Ensure our platforms are performant, reliable, scalable and secure.
  12. Enhance the engineering and agile delivery processes with the team.

What we’re looking for:

  1. You’ll have experience of leading a team of Engineers with a diverse range of skill sets focused on data movement and transformation. Collaborating with stakeholders to maintain services whilst influencing change across the wider team.
  2. You have experience of managing a team responsible for services and the challenges associated with this.
  3. You’re excited about recruiting and developing great engineering talent.
  4. Appreciation of the compliance needs of a highly regulated business and how this can impact the management of data oriented services and platforms.
  5. The technical awareness to balance trade-offs involved in solving technical problems to restore platform service but also able to identify changes needed to prevent service issues proactively.
  6. You communicate actively with peers, your reports, and can handle escalations to business and technical stakeholders.
  7. An in date AWS Certification, for example Cloud Practitioner, Associate Architect or Associate Developer.

Experience that would be advantageous:

  1. Experience in working with the below toolsets:
    • Ab Initio
    • Python
    • Snowflake
    • Sterling File Transfer
    • Logz.io and New Relic
    • AWS services

Where and how you’ll work

This is a permanent position and is based in our Nottingham office. We’ve adopted a flexible hybrid working model – one that creates the opportunity to work in your own way, but also provides great spaces for in-person collaboration.

We’re big on collaboration and connection, so you’ll be based in our Nottingham office 3 days a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Many of our associates have flexible working arrangements, and we’re open to talking about an arrangement that works for you.

What’s in it for you

  1. Bring us all this – and you’ll be well rewarded with a role contributing to the roadmap of an organisation committed to transformation.
  2. We offer high performers strong and diverse career progression, investing heavily in developing great people through our Capital One University training programmes (and appropriate external providers).
  3. Immediate access to our core benefits including pension scheme, bonus, generous holiday entitlement and private medical insurance – with flexible benefits available including season-ticket loans, cycle to work scheme and enhanced parental leave.
  4. Open-plan workspaces and accessible facilities designed to inspire and support you. Our Nottingham head-office has a fully-serviced gym, subsidised restaurant, mindfulness and music rooms.

What you should know about how we recruit

We pride ourselves on hiring the best people, not the same people. Building diverse and inclusive teams is the right thing to do and the smart thing to do. We want to work with top talent: whoever you are, whatever you look like, wherever you come from. We know it’s about what you do, not just what you say.
