Software Engineering Manager
About this role
Capital One is looking for a Software Engineering Manager to join us in our Nottingham office. You will have previous experience of leading a Software Engineering team and be passionate about people and technical leadership.
What you’ll do
- Lead and nurture your team: Coach and develop engineers, positively impacting their careers and the business.
- Provide technical guidance: Stay close to your team’s work, set high engineering standards, understand technical risks, and influence architectural decisions.
- Set context and culture: Ensure your team understands the purpose behind their work and foster a positive culture.
- Manage delivery: Collaborate with Product Owners and Change Delivery Leads to shape roadmaps and deliver high-quality software in a complex regulatory environment.
- Oversee applications: Manage business applications, ensuring they are well-maintained and compliant.
- Represent the business: Advocate for the business interests and improve the environment beyond your immediate team.
What we’re looking for
An approachable and inquisitive leader passionate about growing people, nurturing culture, and leading technical delivery in a complex, regulated environment.
- Experience in leading teams, developing engineers, and managing conflicts constructively.
- Background as an experienced software engineer familiar with technology, architecture, and technical trade-offs.
- Experience with backend tech stack – Java, Spring, AWS, and advocating for best practices like automated testing, CI/CD, and frequent releases.
- Self-reflective with a bias for action.
- Strong ownership and communication skills.
- Drive for positive impact.

Work location and flexibility
This is a permanent role based in Nottingham with a hybrid working model, requiring presence in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
