Capital on Tap started because small businesses were underserved. Big banks were slow, their products weren't fit for purpose, and small business owners often couldn't access what they needed. We set out to fix that. Today we're a financial platform - not just a credit card company. We offer a best-in-class business credit card, SME-focused spend management platform, a savings product that hit £1 billion in funds within its first year, and a growing suite of tools and financial products that make running a small business easier.

This is a Hybrid role, the Engineering team work from our London (Moorgate) Offices 2 days per week. This is a multiple headcount role, so please don't be put off if you've seen this advertised for a while.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • As a Lead Software Engineer at Capital on Tap, you'll be a highly experienced, deeply hands-on engineer who shapes how we build.
  • You'll spend the majority of your time writing and reviewing code, designing systems, and solving complex technical problems; while naturally becoming the go-to technical authority your fellow engineers rely on.
  • You'll work closely with other Technical Leaders, Product Managers, and the wider Engineering Group to deliver high-impact features and ensure our systems scale with the business.
  • Stay deeply hands-on in day-to-day software development, setting the technical standard through the quality of your own work.
  • Design and evolve microservices and distributed systems that are scalable, resilient, and maintainable.
  • Act as the technical authority in your area; you'll be the person engineers turn to when they hit a hard problem.
  • Conduct thorough code reviews and share knowledge that raises the bar across the team.
  • Lead high-impact projects from concept to delivery, making pragmatic architecture decisions along the way.
  • Collaborate closely with Product, QA, and Team Leads to align technical execution with business goals.
  • Identify and mitigate technical risk proactively, keeping delivery on track.
  • Champion engineering best practices, including adoption of AI tools and automation.

  • Strong experience designing and building microservices and distributed systems.
  • Solid grounding in RESTful API design and Azure cloud development.
  • Deep familiarity with modern software development practices and scalable system architecture.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with Product, QA, and other stakeholders.
  • Pragmatic approach to delivery; you know how to ship an MVP and iterate with purpose.
  • Ability to embed deeply within an engineering group, building strong domain knowledge over time and becoming a trusted technical voice across the team and wider business.
  • React or fullstack experience is a plus.
