As we continue to evolve and navigate increasing complexities in the workplace and the communities we serve, we are looking for a strategic and visionary employment counsel and litigation specialist who will build on our global legal and compliance foundation and support our global business services from London. The Counsel will ensure that Capital maintains its excellent standing in our industry, by consulting with business leaders and working as part of cross-functional teams to continue to evolve our policies and business processes.

As a Counsel focused on our Employment and Global Business Services (GBS ) functions, you will apply your proven legal expertise at one of the world’s largest and most respected investment management organizations. You will serve as a trusted business advisor on matters related to employment and litigation, driving strategy, and helping teams make informed decisions that are aligned to organizational objectives. You will also operate across a range of global business services lines, advising on contracts (such as in relation to IT, intra-group structures and distribution), supporting Capital Group’s Global Privacy Office and other GBS functions, like finance and risk.

Day to day, you will:

  • Work with our existing Legal teams in London, Europe and globally to support the delivery of legal services to our GBS stakeholders.

  • Leverage your experience and expertise, particularly in employment law, to strategically advise on a wide range of activities and initiatives such as employee relations matters and employment investigations, disciplinary actions and separations, organizational changes, employment contract issues and reviews, compensation and benefits offerings, and best practices and process improvement.

  • Oversee and handle litigation matters, such as consulting on litigation strategy, responding to subpoenas and regulatory inquiries, assisting with class actions, and engaging and managing outside counsel as needed.

  • Participate in the drafting of contracts and oversight of teams responsible for contracts, including employment and employment-related agreements (e.g., non-compete and non-solicit agreements), vendor contracts, distribution contracts, intra-group contracts, NDAs and so forth.

  • Review Capital Group policies to support our business partners, such as Human Resources and IT.

  • Be willing and open to stretching into different subject areas to support the business as needed, including topics such as privacy, AI and data security.

  • Advise boards, management committees and business groups about regulatory developments.

  • Advise operational teams aiming at implementing regulatory developments.

  • Participate in industry working groups.

  • You have outstanding legal experience, and a minimum of eight years of law firm and/or in-house counsel experience

  • You are strategic, partnering actively and continuously looking for ways to enhance the overall function, as well as proactively managing and reducing employment risk across the organization

  • You are agile, able to anticipate and deliver on the needs of a sophisticated, and fast-paced, business and possess the ability to simultaneously balance a wide range of transactions and projects

  • You are a team player, collaborative, influential and able to communicate effectively across a broad range of stakeholders. You can provide highly credible leadership positions on legal matters, both internally and externally

  • You are flexible, have a growth mindset and are open to learning and developing your expertise and legal reach to support Capital Group’s business holistically for long-term success, embracing challenges in various legal and compliance topics, including for those which you may not have previous experience

Qualifications and Preferences

  • Either UK or US qualified with excellent academics

  • 8-10 years post qualification experience with meaningful (but not necessarily exclusive) expertise and experience in employment and labour law in the UK gained in a top City practice or working in-house in a City institution

  • In-house experience essential

  • Collaborative team mindset and willingness to handle matters outside of primary area of expertise essential

  • International employment and labour, privacy, and AI legal or regulatory experience throughout Europe beneficial

  • Experience with financial services and investment management beneficial

  • Experience working with geographically dispersed and diverse teams helpful

  • Ability to handle various matters at once, potentially in different regions

In addition to a highly competitive base salary, per plan guidelines, restrictions and vesting requirements, you also will be eligible for an individual annual performance bonus, plus Capital’s annual profitability bonus plus a retirement plan where Capital contributes 15% of your eligible earnings.
