Average of 33.75 hours a week at HMS Collingwood. Due to the nature of this role, you must be eligible for UK Security Clearance at SC level.

Help get better trained personnel to the front line faster. Project Selborne is a Transformational Training programme with a strategic goal of modernising Royal Navy training to deliver “better trained sailors to the front line faster”. Your role will be to deliver high quality navigation instruction in support of Warfare Training, Warfare Support Training Groups and Fleet units, as set out in the Statement of Training Requirement. The role primarily focuses on providing effective learner delivery, alongside controlling and operating the Bridge Simulator to support activity conducted within the Royal Navy Navigation Training Unit (NTU).

This role involves a 2 week shift pattern:

  • Week 1: Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm (37.5 hours)
  • Week 2: Monday to Thursday 1pm to 9pm (30 hours)

This averages as 33.75 hours per week for pay.

What you’ll be doing

  • Deliver high‑quality classroom and simulator‑based navigation training, including collision avoidance, ARPA, ECDIS and AIS, in line with your skills and experience.
  • Operate and control the Bridge Simulator to support all training activity within the Navigation Training Unit, ensuring scenarios are safe, immersive, and accurately aligned to the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea.
  • Role‑play key bridge team positions within the simulator, using professional internal and external communication methods to create realistic, high‑fidelity training experiences for Royal Navy learners.
  • Design, develop and update training scenarios, contributing to the continuous improvement of simulator exercises and enhancing the learner experience through creativity, accuracy and operational relevance.
  • Carry out Level 0 maintenance on simulator systems, ensuring equipment is serviceable, safe, and prepared for training delivery.

What we’re looking for

Essential

  • Hold a Royal Navy or MCA‑issued STCW II/1 Watchkeeping Certificate of Competency.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently with learners, colleagues and stakeholders in both classroom and simulator environments.

Desirable

  • Previous instructional or training delivery experience, ideally within a maritime or defence environment, and/or completion of the Defence Trainer Course (DTC – Level 4). Full training and certification will be provided if not yet held.
  • Familiarity with Royal Navy training procedures, standards and operating practices.
