Gas Safe Register, delivered in partnership with Capita, is recruiting an experienced, ACS-qualified gas professional to join our field services team as a Gas Inspector – Large Businesses.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to move beyond traditional field work and use their technical knowledge to influence how gas safety is managed across large, complex business environments.
In this role, you will work with a select group of large businesses and Gas Safety Management Registrations, providing inspection oversight, technical guidance and risk-based assessment activity.
You will be trusted to operate with autonomy, engage with senior business contacts and field teams, and contribute directly to maintaining high gas safety standards across the industry.
This is a field-based role covering Essex and the surrounding areas, with travel required.

About Gas Safe Register
Gas Safe Register is the official gas registration body for the United Kingdom, Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey.
By law, gas businesses and engineers must be registered to carry out gas work legally.
The register exists to help protect the public from unsafe gas work by maintaining the official list of competent gas businesses and engineers, supporting inspections, investigating unsafe work and raising gas safety awareness.
Capita delivers the Gas Safe Register service under a concession arrangement with the Health and Safety Executive and related authorities.
Together, the service plays an important role in maintaining gas safety standards and helping consumers have confidence that gas work is carried out safely and legally.

- What You’ll Be Doing
- Manage the risk-based inspection regime against identified Large Businesses (employing a direct labour force and/or sub-contractors) by undertaking Managing Gas Safety Assessments and the co-ordination of planned field inspections working with all field staff.
- Ensure that Large Businesses work in compliance with recognised industry standards and that gas safety is managed effectively.
- Act as the day-to-day manager and central point of contact for the large businesses and GSMR relating to all technical/operational matters, ensuring that all GSR strategies are fully implemented, within assigned registrations.
- Work with and support all Field Operational Teams (OMs/Inspectors) to ensure that any monitoring requirements are effectively and efficiently undertaken and feedback is delivered in a timely and constructive manner.
- Support enforcement bodies (e. g. HSE and local authorities) where needed in dealing with large business activities.
- Effectively support the escalation of complaints against service (internal and external).
Work through to a natural conclusion for complex or those of a sensitive nature that has been raised against a Large Business or GSMR.
- Effectively support the application of proportionate sanctions in a timely manner in respect of registered businesses.
- Maximise opportunities and minimise the risk to service that helps Gas Safe Register achieve its core objectives.
- Proactively ensure personal safety and the safety of others by ensuring that the companies Health and Safety Policy and risk assessments are adhered to.
- Support the business via Stakeholder activities as and when required.
- Support other departments as and when required e. g., Technical.
- Ensure all administration tasks are completed within prescribed timescales.
- Comply with Capita company policies.
- What We’re Looking For
This role would suit an experienced gas professional who is ready to apply their technical expertise in a broader, more influential position.
You may already be working as a senior engineer, inspector, auditor, technical specialist or manager within the gas industry and looking for a role where you can combine field credibility with stakeholder engagement, risk management and public safety impact.
You will need to be confident operating as a subject matter expert, comfortable engaging with large businesses and able to make evidence-based decisions in complex technical and operational environments.
Strong organisation, resilience, professional judgement and a commitment to high safety and compliance standards will be key to success.
Essential Requirements
- Subject matter expert (SME) with extensive gas industry experience and relevant qualifications -
- Must hold as a minimum the following ACS certificates of competence: CCN1, CENWAT1, CKR1, HTR1.
Ideally the applicant will have additional ACS certificates in LPG, Non-Domestic & Catering, LAU1 and DAH1.
- In-depth knowledge of Enforcement Bodies affected by the Registration Scheme.
- Ability to use tools and undertake any appropriate tests and checks during inspection work i. e., be physically fit to work on all types of gas meters, pipework, and appliances an at low (on floor), medium (at kitchen cupboard heights) and higher levels (use of step and extendable ladders).
- Relevant experience and/or qualification in a management discipline. Relevant Auditor qualification.
- In-depth knowledge of Gas Industry Sector affected by the Registration Scheme.
- Appropriate underpinning gas industry experience, knowledge and technical skills.
- Full, clean drivers license.

- Ability to liaise with businesses and corporate contacts, build and develop relationships.
- An excellent written and verbal communicator able to manage people and situations to achieve business objectives.
- To effectively solve problems and manage risk to ensure achievement of targets.
- Key understanding of KPIs & PIs relating to the contract.
- Presentation and facilitation skills.
- Strong negotiating skills.
- Computer literate, with experience of using Microsoft Office packages (e. g. Word, Excel, Power Point & Outlook)
- Ideally, some experience or qualification in project/contract management.
