Overview of the Platform Engineer role to support public sector clients in building and improving digital services using open-source software. You will join an agile team that values collaboration, innovation, and problem-solving.

Hybrid working: The work will be a blend of Company offices, client sites, and your home. You will not be able to work from home 100% of the time.

Your Role:

  • Undertake cross-functional engineering projects, working in small teams with engineers in different knowledge areas to build supportable, sustainable, and reliable services.
  • Work with modern technology; the UK Government IT strategy emphasizes user-centric design, open source, CI/CD, microservices, and cloud architectures.
  • Contribute to the vision and deliver real impact within the digital transformation of the UK Public Sector.
  • Develop and progress through large-scale, technically challenging projects, with ongoing learning in modern environments.

Your Security Clearance:

Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) checks are required for appointment. During recruitment you will be asked about your security clearance eligibility, including country of residence and nationality. In addition to BPSS, you will also need SC (Security Check) Clearance or be eligible for this level of clearance (UK resident for at least 5 years and not having left the country for more than 28 consecutive days in this period).

Your Skills and Experience:

Are you a Platform/DevOps Engineer who wants to extend knowledge rapidly on challenging projects? A broad experience with modern open source stacks is desirable. If you can demonstrate a good selection of these skills and a passion for developing new technical skills, we’d like to talk to you.

Essential skills:

  • Experience debugging a complex, multi-server service in a high-availability production environment.
  • Good written and verbal communication, able to convey complex technical concepts clearly to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong knowledge of Linux, Docker, and Kubernetes.
  • Experience building infrastructure in AWS using Terraform.
  • Experience in automation tooling such as Ansible.
  • Provide technical leadership within a project and/or to junior team members.
  • Strong understanding of CI environments and how they support automation with orchestration tools.

Desirable skills:

  • Core Networking & Load balancing.
  • Jenkins / Concourse / GitLab CI.
  • Git / GitHub / GitLab.
  • Graphite / Grafana / ELK / Prometheus.
  • SQL / No-SQL databases.
  • HashiCorp tools (Packer / Terraform / Vault / Consul).
