That said, we trust our Canvanauts to choose the balance that empowers them and their team to achieve their goals and so you have choice in where and how you work.
What you’d be doing in this role:
- You will be the main driver for improving quality in your embedded team and work with key stakeholders to drive process, tooling, and testing changes.
- You will also be responsible for creating the test strategy for the team's projects, with a focus on shift left QA activities instead of just test execution.
- You will also be the subject matter expert for the team's testing and product knowledge, driving knowledge sharing and documentation for your team and other teams' software engineers and QA.
- You'll also need to model initiative and ownership in achieving goals, improving processes and solutions for other QA engineers.
- You'll work with other Senior QA engineers to define expectations and up skill other QA engineers.
You're probably a match if:
- You are proactive, results-oriented, and comfortable navigating ambiguity, thriving in a fast-paced environment where you can take initiative and drive outcomes.
- You have experience with working with product teams, and defining the QA process for your team.
- You can articulate technical concepts clearly and work effectively within a team environment, readily sharing knowledge and engaging with stakeholders across the engineering organization.
- You have demonstrated experience building and maintaining robust Test Automation Frameworks.
- You have experience in testing complex web apps, mobile apps (iOS and Android), and backend services.
- You are meticulous in your work and passionate about testing.
- You have experience in coaching/guiding team members with testing best practices.
- You possess a solid grasp of test automation principles across different levels (unit, integration, E2E) and understand the challenges involved in building reliable, maintainable test suites and frameworks.
- You have automated tasks using a scripting language like Bash or Python.
- You have a good understanding of what needs to be included in unit, integration, and end-to-end tests and can coach engineers on what needs to be automated.
Not a must, but a big plus if:
- You have experience with Creative Software. Experience with concepts like Animation and Data Visualisation is a bonus, and familiarity with professional creative software is preferred.
- Experience with test frameworks such as Cyprus or Playwright.
- You have experience with new and upcoming tech like Machine Learning Model testing.
- You have experience with Accessibility testing.

How to prepare for a job interview at Canva
✨Brush Up on Your Coding Skills
For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.
✨Know Your Tools and Frameworks
Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Canva uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.
✨Showcase Your Projects
Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.
✨Prepare for Behavioural Questions
While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
