Do you believe outstanding animal welfare and inspiring visitor experiences go hand in hand? Are you a confident, hands-on farm leader who thrives in a dynamic, people-centred environment? We’re looking for an experienced and values-driven Farm & Livestock Manager to take a pivotal leadership role at the heart of the Rare Breeds Centre – a much-loved working farm and visitor attraction operated by Canterbury Oast Trust. This is a permanent, full-time position working 37.5 hours per week (including weekends on a rota basis).

About the role

This is a high-impact, hands-on role where you’ll lead the day-to-day operation of a 100-acre site, home to around 800 animals across multiple species. You’ll set the standard for excellent animal welfare, biosecurity, and compliance, while shaping a welcoming, engaging farm experience for visitors, volunteers, and the people we support. Working closely with colleagues across visitor services, estates, education and conservation, you’ll build a confident, skilled farm team culture and play a central role in developing the future of the farm offer.

What you’ll be responsible for:

  • Leading all aspects of livestock care, welfare, health monitoring and husbandry across the site
  • Managing the safe, efficient day-to-day running of the farm within a busy public attraction
  • Inspiring, coaching and developing the farm team, volunteers and people we support
  • Ensuring robust compliance with animal welfare, health & safety, fire, environmental and regulatory requirements
  • Supporting engaging visitor experiences, demonstrations, events and educational activity
  • Contributing to strategic planning, budget management and continuous improvement across the farm operation
  • Playing an active role in welfare governance, including participation in the Ethics Committee

Who we’re looking for

You’ll bring strong livestock management experience, sound judgement, and the confidence to lead in a live, visitor-facing environment. Just as important is your ability to motivate others, remain calm under pressure, and lead with empathy, professionalism and integrity. You don’t need to tick every box, we value transferable skills, potential and a willingness to learn just as much as direct experience.

Why join Canterbury Oast Trust?

You’ll be part of a purpose-driven charity committed to creating meaningful opportunities for adults with learning disabilities, while delivering outstanding experiences for visitors and maintaining the highest standards of animal welfare. We offer a supportive, values-led culture where your expertise will genuinely shape the future of the farm.

Ready to apply? If this role excites you and you believe you could make a positive contribution, we’d love to hear from you – even if you don’t meet every requirement.
