We are looking for an experienced and valuesâdriven Farm & Livestock Manager to take a pivotal leadership role at the heart of the Rare Breeds Centre â a muchâloved working farm and visitor attraction operated by Canterbury Oast Trust. This is a permanent, fullâtime position working 37.5 hours per week (including weekends on a rota basis).
About the role
This is a highâimpact, handsâon role where you will lead the dayâtoâday operation of a 100âacre site, home to around 800 animals across multiple species. You will set the standard for excellent animal welfare, biosecurity, and compliance, while shaping a welcoming, engaging farm experience for visitors, volunteers, and the people we support. Working closely with colleagues across visitor services, estates, education and conservation, you will build a confident, skilled farm team culture and play a central role in developing the future of the farm offer.
What you will be responsible for:
- Leading all aspects of livestock care, welfare, health monitoring and husbandry across the site
- Managing the safe, efficient dayâtoâday running of the farm within a busy public attraction
- Inspiring, coaching and developing the farm team, volunteers and people we support
- Ensuring robust compliance with animal welfare, health & safety, fire, environmental and regulatory requirements
- Supporting engaging visitor experiences, demonstrations, events and educational activity

- Playing an active role in welfare governance, including participation in the Ethics Committee
Who we are looking for
You will bring strong livestock management experience, sound judgement, and the confidence to lead in a live, visitorâfacing environment. Just as important is your ability to motivate others, remain calm under pressure, and lead with empathy, professionalism and integrity. You do not need to tick every box; we value transferable skills, potential and a willingness to learn just as much as direct experience.
Why join Canterbury Oast Trust?
You will be part of a purposeâdriven charity committed to creating meaningful opportunities for adults with learning disabilities, while delivering outstanding experiences for visitors and maintaining the highest standards of animal welfare. We offer a supportive, valuesâled culture where your expertise will genuinely shape the future of the farm.
