Overview
Canterbury Museums and Galleries are looking to recruit a Museum Caretaker to help ensure the smooth running of two of Canterbury’s most popular visitor attractions; the Beaney House of Art and Knowledge and Canterbury Roman Museum. The successful candidate will join a committed team responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of these public buildings.

About this Museum Caretaker job
This role plays a key part in maintaining the smooth operation of Canterbury Museums and Galleries buildings.
What you’ll get up to
- You’ll ensure the continuous, high-quality presentation of the Museum buildings, including the Beaney and Roman Museum.
- You’ll maintain the above buildings and the two museum store sites.
- You’ll support the Collection and Programming team with exhibition installations.
- You’ll monitor and maintain museum and gallery environmental conditions.
Working pattern
Contract type: Zero Hours, approximately 12-18 hours a week. We operate 7 days a week, so you will need to be able to work on site over a two week shift pattern which includes weekends and occasional evenings. This role is based across two locations, The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge and Canterbury Roman Museum.
About you, the ideal Museum Caretaker
Your knowledge
- Able to understand and demonstrate knowledge of building management systems and general maintenance procedures.
- Understanding of working in heritage buildings.
Your experience
- Demonstrate experience of delivering excellent customer care, principles and procedures.
- Experience of working in a direct customer-focused environment.
Your skills
- Cleaning & Building Maintenance skills.
- MS Office skills, including Word and Excel.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
- Flexible and adaptable to meet business needs.
Your qualifications
- GCSEs level 4-9 in Maths & English or equivalent educational qualification.
- First aid certificate/Health and Safety – willing to obtain if not already holding this certificate.
