This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced project manager to play a central role in one of the most innovative widening participation initiatives in UK medical education. Kent and Medway Medical School (KMMS) is a joint venture between the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University, established in 2020 with a distinctive widening participation mission. KMMS is developing a pioneering Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) programme, one of the first of its kind in the UK, which will create new pathways into medicine for high‑achieving biomedical science students and directly address NHS workforce needs. The expected launch date for the pathway is September 2027.

The programme will enable biomedical science students who perform highly in Years 1 and 2, assessed through a standardised selection process, to transition into medicine via a bespoke transition year. Selected students will then join Year 3 of the undergraduate medical degree with credible prior learning, graduating as medical practitioners after a further three years of study on the BMBS programme.

Working closely with the Senior Lecturer (APL Lead) and colleagues across both partner universities, the Project Manager will be central to making this ambition a reality and coordinating the complex multi‑institutional workstreams that will bring this landmark programme to life.

As Project Manager (APL Programme) you can expect to be involved in:

  • Effectively managing all aspects of assigned projects from inception to delivery, developing integrated project plans that ensure a consistent approach across both partner universities, aligning with the procedures and guidelines of each institution, and monitoring each stage against the project plan to ensure delivery against agreed outcomes within time, cost and quality constraints.
  • Establishing and maintaining appropriate project level governance through the application of project control methods and tools, such as document management, change control, financial tracking and resource planning.
  • Navigate and align parallel governance and approval processes at both universities, producing regular project update reports to ensure effective decision making.
  • Providing day‑to‑day management and leadership of the project team, which may be drawn from staff across both partner institutions, to ensure their motivation and the efficient running of the project.

What will you bring to the role?

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience.
  • Recognised Project Management qualification (e.g. PRINCE2, APM) OR substantial project management experience in a similar role.
  • Experience of managing and successfully delivering complex and/or large projects to time, cost, quality and benefit realisation requirements in an HE and PSRB start‑up environment.
  • Substantial experience of key project delivery activities such as risk management, stakeholder management, planning, budget management, change management, etc.

We particularly welcome applications from black, Asian and minority ethnic candidates as they are under‑represented at this level in this area.
