About Canterbury Cathedral

About the role
The Cathedral Constable is responsible for meeting the day-to-day requirements of the Cathedral Chapter, including the protection and safety of people and property.
PRINCIPAL TASKS
- Assist members of the public as part of the Ministry of Welcome.
- Provide protection to all residents, staff and visitors to the Cathedral and its Precincts within Constabulary training guidelines and Operating procedures.
- Follow all relevant protocols in respect of Safeguarding.
- Maintain Good Order within the Cathedral and its Precincts.
- Engage in the prevention of crime within the Precincts.
- To ensure the safety and wellbeing of staff and visitors to the Cathedral, utilise all relevant powers under Statute and Common Law including the Ecclesiastical Courts Jurisdiction Act 1860 in order to detain, where necessary, perpetrators or suspects of crime.
- Work closely with the Kings School Security team.
- Liaise with Kent Police teams with regards to external incidents and issues.
- Maintain accurate records of incidents in reports, statements and notebooks.
- Communicate effectively in highly emotive and / or conflict situations.
- Comprehensive patrol and monitoring of the Cathedral and its Precincts.
- Control the Cathedrals entry points, and issue passes as required to prevent unauthorised access to both people and vehicles.
- Carry out emergency actions and procedures in response to any incident or fire/intruder alarm. Contact and liaise with all relevant emergency services should they be required.
- Monitor the Cathedral CCTV systems.
- Administer First Aid where necessary.
- Complete mandatory Constabulary training.
- As an employee of the Chapter of Canterbury to fully endorse, understand and exercise the roles and responsibilities contained within Chapters Health and Safety policy.
- Carry out orders given by Senior Constabulary Officers and Sergeants and any reasonable tasks that may be required by Chapter.
As part of a high-profile team that represents the Cathedral, it is expected that the dress, bearing and behaviour of a Cathedral Constable is beyond reproach at all times. Constables will uphold the traditions of the Cathedral Constabulary.
This is a 3 month Fixed Term contract terminating on 31st December 2026
