About Human Rights First and PALA
Human Rights First is a leading advocacy organisation dedicated to protecting the rights and dignity of vulnerable populations around the world. In response to the U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan, we launched Project: Afghan Legal Assistance (PALA)—a nationwide initiative bringing together legal organisations, law firms, resettlement agencies, and other partners to assist Afghan refugees. PALA helps newly arrived Afghans and their immigration attorneys navigate complex U.S. immigration processes, providing critical legal support to secure safety and stability in the United States. This program plays a vital role in ensuring displaced Afghans can rebuild their lives while maintaining family unity.
About the Internship
This Fall 2025 Legal Internship offers law students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in immigration advocacy and human rights law. Interns will work directly with attorneys and staff supporting Afghan refugees, assisting with asylum applications, family reunification petitions, and other legal processes. The role provides exposure to client meetings, legal documentation, and case management, all while contributing to a nation-wide coalition advocating for Afghan immigrants’ rights. By participating, interns will not only enhance their legal skills but also make a tangible difference in helping vulnerable individuals secure safety and long-term legal status in the United States.
Key Responsibilities
- Interns will support PALA’s legal team in a variety of ways, including:
- Assisting staff during client meetings and conducting screening/intake interviews
- Drafting case summaries, legal declarations, and advocacy materials for asylum seekers
- Preparing and filing immigration-related forms such as asylum applications, permanent residency petitions, and family reunification paperwork
- Attending legal training sessions, coalition calls, advocacy group meetings, and panel discussions
- Offering language interpretation services if fluent in Dari or Pashto
- Assisting with special projects as assigned to advance PALA’s mission
Desired Skills & Qualifications
We seek candidates with strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines. Applicants should have excellent research and computer skills, and a demonstrated interest in immigration advocacy and human rights. Experience with vulnerable populations, survivors of trauma, or in immigration law is an asset. The ability to work independently and collaboratively is key. Dari or Pashto fluency is a plus but not required. Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited JD or LLM program and possess initiative, adaptability, and enthusiasm for contributing to meaningful legal work.
