The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru is seeking applications for a full-time Project Assistant to contribute to the implementation of the ‘Witness Protection Scheme in Karnataka’. The position is available through December 2025 and involves travel across Karnataka.
Witnesses play a vital role in the criminal justice system, but their testimonies are often compromised due to threats or coercion. The Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita 2023 (Section 398) mandates states to create their own witness-protection regulations. This project aims to:
- Conduct four stakeholder consultations, including three district visits (Belagavi, Udupi, Mysuru) and one at NLSIU, Bengaluru, involving police, judiciary, KSLSA, NALSA, NGOs, and think tanks
- Develop a comprehensive Stakeholder Analysis & Outcome Document with key insights, role mapping, and actionable policy recommendations
Key Responsibilities
- Organize and manage logistics for all consultations and field visits
- Draft briefing documents, interview guides, and reading materials
- Liaise with key stakeholders and maintain contact databases
- Collect, compile, and analyze consultation data; contribute to the final report
- Maintain timely progress and financial documentation per NLSIU and HSF standards
- Process internal documentation including approvals, invoicing, and reimbursements
- Provide support for additional research or administrative duties as needed
Required Qualifications
Essential: Bachelor’s degree in law, public policy, social sciences, criminology, or related fields
Preferred: Master’s degree in relevant disciplines such as criminal justice, law, or public policy
Required Experience
Essential: Demonstrated academic or professional engagement with criminal justice or access-to-justice themes; Working knowledge of Excel and familiarity with basic budgeting
Preferred: Experience in fieldwork or project coordination; Exposure to working with justice-sector actors and report-writing; Proficiency in spoken Kannada; Willingness to travel across Karnataka at short notice
Skills and Competencies
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
- Effective time management and coordination abilities
