Here at Canon Europe, the patents team works directly with our European inventors and our colleagues at the global IP headquarters in Japan to provide a full range of patent services across Europe. We have seen growth recently in our patent work across a number of technology areas, for example, in standards essential patents and network video systems. Some knowledge or experience of patenting technology standards is preferred but not essential for the role.

Responsibilities

  • Directly work with inventors at our research centres and group companies to protect inventions.
  • Participate in growing our patent offering for standardisation projects, including drafting, prosecution, filing strategies and claim charting.
  • Coordinate the worldwide prosecution of inventions originating in Europe such as those directed to digital standards.
  • Relevant technologies include video coding (HEVC/VVC), video streaming (MPEG-DASH), wireless communications (5G/6G and Wi-Fi 802.11), wireless power transfer and connected vehicles (V2X/V2V).
  • File and prosecute patent applications in the UK and Europe protecting inventions originating from CINC R&D centres in Japan, including filing appeals at the EPO.
  • Work with patent engineers at CINC’s IP HQ in Japan to coordinate prosecution strategies in the UK and Europe.
  • Support our group companies such as Milestone (network video software solutions), NT-ware (cloud print solutions) and IRIS (OCR technologies).
  • This work is wide ranging and can include everything from invention harvesting, through patent drafting and prosecution, to freedom to operate, licensing and enforcement.
  • It may also include assisting with the handling of negotiations and disputes with third parties.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a university degree in a technical subject.
  • Fully qualified or finals standard European and UK patent attorney.
  • Relevant working experience as a patent engineer or attorney, for example in a private practice or an in-house patent department.
  • Experience or interest in digital standards and/or standard-essential patents work would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of AI technologies and patent law would also be an advantage but not essential.
  • Experience of foreign (non-UK/EP) patent prosecution preferred, e.g. US, China, Japan etc.
