The Legal Counsel will provide high quality, targeted and accessible legal input across a range of areas and will work as a business partner in the relevant entity to secure and deliver effective solutions to legal issues. The Legal Counsel will be the in-house expert for their assigned business areas and will need to work with a high degree of autonomy on a range of legal matters. The role holder will be expected to develop and maintain a broad knowledge of our business areas, to develop strong working relationships with colleagues at all levels across the business and to be able to be both influential and credible in securing high levels of legal compliance whilst providing guidance and solutions that support the effective delivery of the wider business strategic objectives.
Responsibilities
- Act as Legal Business Partner to assigned business leader(s) to deliver Legal capabilities in close connection and collaboration with the country/entity leadership team and the wider EMEA Legal team.
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the business operations, risks and opportunities, with demonstrable leadership in enabling and advancing Canon’s success.
- Manage a range of legal matters and tasks, without supervision (except where the subject otherwise requires), which may include a variety of legal issues including contracts, marketing issues (including advertising & promotions), IP, discounts & pricing policies, litigation/dispute management, competition law, anti-corruption, trade control, company secretarial and any other areas of corporate compliance applicable to the entity/RSO/NSO/area of operations.
- Proactively identify legal issues at the earliest opportunity as well as developing and implementing solutions to address them.
Governance, Risk and Compliance
- Be the local lead for compliance/risk management strategies, anticipating both legal and business impacts.
- Utilise a range of influencing skills to secure outcomes that are compliant with the law and company policies.
Operational Efficiencies and Digital Transformation
- Develop local Legal practices in the most effective and efficient way to deliver sustainable business growth, mitigate risks and manage compliance.
- Lead the effective use of technology and tools to support legal processes combined with positive business outcomes.
People and Organisation
- Deliver local training to enable non-Legal colleagues to understand the relevant legal context, raise awareness of legal issues, develop legal acumen and support and enable colleagues to make best use of legal advice.
- Support the development and delivery of a coherent approach to meeting Canon’s legal requirements in close collaboration with the wider legal team.
Qualifications
- Qualified lawyer or holder of relevant master of law degree or other degree with appropriate postgraduate legal qualification to practice law in a particular jurisdiction.
- Relevant in-house experience in managing regional indirect sales operations and/or local direct sales operations as a legal counsel.
- Ability to display relevant Legal MTP skills & behaviours.
- Ability to work with relevant (legal) technology and tooling, including the MS Office suite.
- Commercial mindset, preferably within a technology/manufacturing sector.
- Proficiency in English and relevant local language at working level required.
- Willingness to travel on an occasional basis.
