Canford Law is seeking an experienced Costs & Enforcement Lawyer to lead the recovery of aged debt across the firm’s client ledger. The role will focus on reviewing outstanding legal fees and issuing breach of contract proceedings where payment has not been received in line with the agreement. The successful candidate will manage matters from pre‑action stage through to judgment and enforcement, ensuring the firm adopts an efficient and commercially focused approach to recovering outstanding debts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and assess aged debt across the firm’s client accounts.
  • Advise on the most appropriate recovery strategy for outstanding damages and unpaid legal fees.
  • Draft and issue Letters Before Action in accordance with the relevant pre‑action protocols.
  • Issue and manage breach of contract proceedings through the County Court for recovery of unpaid invoices.
  • Conduct litigation including drafting claims, applications and pleadings where required.
  • Obtain County Court Judgments (CCJs) and pursue enforcement where debts remain unpaid.
  • Liaise with internal departments regarding outstanding accounts and case progression.
  • Maintain accurate records within the firm’s case management system.
  • Provide reporting to senior management on recovery activity and outcomes.

Candidate Requirements

  • Qualified Solicitor with the right to work and practice in the UK.
  • Demonstrable experience in civil litigation and debt recovery proceedings.
  • Strong working knowledge of County Court procedures and enforcement mechanisms.
  • Experience managing litigation files from pre‑action stage through to judgment and enforcement.
  • Ability to manage a caseload independently and work efficiently in a high‑volume environment.
  • Strong drafting, negotiation and communication skills.
  • Commercial awareness and a results‑driven approach to debt recovery.
  • Experience recovering professional service fees or legal costs.
  • Familiarity with legal practice management or case management systems.
  • Previous experience working within a law firm environment.
