Canford Law is seeking an experienced Credit Controller to join our growing Finance team in our Manchester Spinningfields office. This is a newly created role designed to support the firm's continued growth and expansion. You will work closely with fee earners, department heads and senior leadership to ensure the timely collection of outstanding client fees and maintain strong cash flow across the business. You will take ownership of aged debt management, provide meaningful reporting and analysis, and help drive improvements in debtor performance across multiple divisions. As the business continues to evolve, there will be opportunities to support wider group operations and contribute to the development of credit control processes across a growing organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Proactively manage and collect outstanding client debt through telephone, email and written correspondence.
  • Produce and distribute weekly aged debt reports to senior leaders.
  • Monitor and analyse aged debt across multiple divisions within the business.
  • Work closely with fee earners to accelerate collections and resolve outstanding account queries.
  • Conduct account reconciliations and investigate payment discrepancies.
  • Monitor debtor days and provide reporting and analysis to support business decision‑making.
  • Escalate severely aged debt matters and liaise with enforcement teams where recovery action is required.
  • Ensure compliance with company credit control policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records using the firm's systems and ensure all collection activity is appropriately documented.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with clients while protecting the firm's commercial interests.
  • Identify opportunities to improve collection performance and cash flow processes.
  • Support the wider finance team with ad hoc duties as required.

Candidate Requirements

  • Previous experience working within a Credit Control role.
  • Strong telephone manner with confidence communicating at all levels.
  • Experience managing aged debt and driving collections activity.
  • Excellent negotiation and relationship‑building skills.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial information and reporting.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and manage competing deadlines.
  • Confident user of Microsoft Excel and finance systems.
  • A proactive approach with a strong desire to improve processes and deliver results.
  • Experience within a professional services or legal environment would be advantageous but is not essential.
  • Right to work in the UK.
