An established and growing organisation within the construction and waste management sector is seeking a Technical Waste Advisor to join its Environmental & Compliance team in the Southwest. The business operates multiple inert landfill and waste treatment facilities and is continuing to expand across the region. This role offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced waste professional to play a key role in ensuring environmental compliance and supporting sustainable waste management operations.
The Role
The Technical Waste Advisor will be responsible for assessing and classifying waste materials to determine suitability for treatment and disposal facilities, ensuring compliance with environmental permits, waste acceptance procedures, and relevant legislation. The role will involve reviewing technical documentation, liaising with customers and laboratories, supporting onsite verification testing, and maintaining accurate records within internal systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Review site investigation reports, soil reports, waste classifications, and technical documentation.
- Assess and approve/reject waste materials in line with waste acceptance criteria.
- Identify opportunities for material segregation and alternative disposal or treatment solutions.
- Record and manage waste enquiries within internal systems.
- Liaise with customers, consultants, laboratories, and operational teams regarding waste compliance matters.
- Support onsite verification testing procedures, including coordinating sampling, courier arrangements, and reviewing laboratory results.
- Escalate non-conformances and assist with corrective actions where required.
- Provide technical guidance on waste classification, characterisation, and disposal options.
- Support compliance with environmental, health & safety, and company procedures.
About You
The successful candidate will ideally have:
- Experience within waste management, environmental compliance, or contaminated land.
- Strong knowledge of waste legislation, Duty of Care requirements, WM3 guidance, Landfill Directive, and CD&E waste.
- Experience interpreting soil analysis and waste classification data.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong IT skills, particularly Microsoft Excel.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Desirable
- Degree in Environmental Science or related discipline.
- Experience with environmental permitting, soil sampling, or hazardous waste assessment systems.
