Job Summary
Are you an enthusiastic and motivated Sonographer looking for your next opportunity in a busy and friendly department? We are looking for an experienced Sonographer who is committed to providing high quality, effective patient care to join our friendly Ultrasound team at Colchester and Clacton Hospitals. This post covers obstetrics, in‑patients, gynaecology and general medical ultrasound.
We are a department that prides ourselves on our supportive atmosphere and strong working relationships throughout the team. This is an excellent opportunity to further your clinical experience in a department which is committed to its staff and their development, with opportunities to progress in specialist fields of interest.
We are an expanding department and you will work with a team of Imaging Assistants, trainee Sonographers, Sonographers and Radiologists. You will be expected to participate in the training of student sonographers and support the service as it develops.
You will need to be HCPC registration or other UK recognised bodies (e.g. NMC) with a CASE Accredited Post Graduate Diploma (PgD) or Post Graduate Certificate (PgC) in Medical Ultrasound.
We work a variety of shifts and can offer flexible working including weekends, within service needs.

Main duties of the job
- Undertaking and reporting on a variety of ultrasound examinations on a rotational basis. The range of examinations includes obstetrics (nuchal translucency scan, anatomy scans and growth scans), gynaecology and general medical ultrasound.
- Providing a high quality, efficient and effective ultrasound service comprising unsupervised scanning sessions to the people of North East Essex.
- Working as an independent practitioner, performing scans to a high diagnostic standard, prioritising workload, formulating a comprehensive, accurate report, and communicating the results via the agreed method to clinicians/patients and to be accountable for your own professional actions.
- Providing specialist advice pertaining to the ultrasound service. Being responsible for the training and supervision of all staff and students within the Ultrasound Unit.
- Safely use all ultrasound equipment, being able to resolve first‑line problems, recording accurate details of equipment faults, reporting faults and liaising with and supervising engineers.

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
- DCR (R), Degree or BSc in Radiography, Midwifery, Nursing, Science, Health Science or equivalent.
- Relevant post‑graduate qualification in ultrasound, a Pg Certificate or Diploma in Medical Ultrasound (DMU) or equivalent.
- Current HCPC/NMC registration.
- Evidence of completed and planned Continuing Professional Development.
Essential Experience
- Full range of ultrasound experience, to include obstetrics & gynaecology, general medical and small parts ultrasound.
- Experience of teaching and assessing student sonographers.
- Recent NHS experience.
- Working with the public / ill people.
