Spire Harpenden Hospital is seeking an experienced Outpatient Services Nursing Manager to lead and further develop our high‑performing and fast‑paced outpatient department. This is a key leadership role with responsibility for clinical quality, operational performance, and service development across a large and diverse patient population.
Our multidisciplinary team including surgeons, oncologists, pharmacists and specialist nurses ensure that our patients feel safe, confident and reassured every step of the way. As well as our treatment rooms, the outpatient service also includes a separate minor ops suite and a dedicated dressings room, seeing patients from the age of 7 upwards.
We have six operating theatres covering a wide range of specialities and procedures including Ortho, Gynae and Cardio. There is an ITU department providing care and accommodating more complex patients, as well as an award-winning cancer service. We have a number of developmental training courses and progression opportunities available for our ambitious employees.
Duties and responsibilities
Our outpatient department supports over 300 patients every day across a diverse range of specialties, offering a dynamic, high‑performing clinical environment. As Nursing Manager, you will play a pivotal leadership role within this busy service, shaping the future of outpatient care while supporting and developing a large multidisciplinary team.
This is an excellent opportunity for a senior nurse leader who thrives in a fast‑paced setting and is passionate about delivering outstanding patient care, driving service improvement, and working collaboratively with a wide consultant body.
In this role you will:
- Provide visible, inspiring clinical and operational leadership to the outpatient services team
- Ensure the consistent delivery of safe, high‑quality, efficient, and patient‑centred care
- Lead and develop a highly skilled multidisciplinary team of Nurses and HCAs, fostering a positive and supportive culture
- Manage and optimise performance against key quality, operational, and financial KPIs
- Build and maintain strong, effective working relationships with over 200 consultant clinicians
- Embed Clinical Governance, risk management, and patient safety as core elements of daily practice
- Lead audits, quality reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and service efficiency
- Support the development, expansion, and implementation of new outpatient services
- Oversee key HR processes, including recruitment, appraisal, performance management, and staff development planning
Who we’re looking for:
- Nursing Diploma or Degree
- NMC Registration with no restrictions
- Previous experience in an outpatients department at a senior level is essential
- Previous team management experience
- Ability to manage, motivate, support, develop and lead the department
- A focus on positive patient experience
- Competent across a range of clinical management and leadership skills
- Experience in performance monitoring and reporting capabilities
- Knowledge of appropriate standards and external bodies, such as the Care Quality Commission
- Auditing skills across clinical standards and departments
- Ability to implement continuous improvement initiatives
