Cancer Society of New Zealand Nelson Tasman – Nelson
The Support & Information Coordinator: Te Waka Hau Ora works as a member of the Nelson Tasman Centre's Supportive Care team across Nelson and Motueka offices, working together to ensure the provision of a range of practical cancer information, support, and resources for people impacted by cancer. The 20-24 hours role involves a variety of tasks: working individually with people and their whānau, coordination of groups and programmes; as well as supporting the Cancer Society's volunteer and community-based initiatives. Services are provided within the Cancer Society NZ National Model of Care framework.
Key responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive, evidence-based information and support to clients and their whānau by phone, in person, electronically; and/or in liaison with other services
- Undertake individualised needs assessment to determine the appropriate information and support
- Work from a person-centred approach, ensuring the person and their whānau are at the centre of decisions which relate to their life
- Demonstrate an understanding of Kaupapa Māori, tikanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi when working with Māori clients, Iwi and communities
- Provide advocacy and navigation to support clients to access the services they need
- Coordinate and facilitate education and support groups for cancer patients and/or their whānau
- Secure management of patient database systems, keeping up to date and timely records of interactions
- Collaborate with the Volunteer Coordinator to recruit and train Cancer Society Volunteer Visitors
- Develop and maintain working relationships with public hospital services, local Māori health services, and primary health services
- Participate in community presentations and events to provide cancer education and information
About you
- A relevant degree and/or experience in healthcare, social services/counselling, or social work
- A proven ability to work well in a team environment as well as the ability to work alone without supervision
- Understanding and appreciation of cross-cultural issues and concerns, in particular knowledge of tikanga Māori and local iwi
- An ability to maintain effective organisational systems to ensure the successful delivery of a variety of individual and community-based services
- An ability to be aware of and sensitive to the psychosocial needs of people with cancer
- A high level of communication skills including the ability to empathise with people and their whānau who are facing cancer
- Intermediate level competence in the use of the Microsoft Office suite, particularly Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint
- Integrity, autonomy, and ability to work collaboratively within the team
- Mental and emotional resilience as a member of the team to constructively address and overcome challenges
