The role supports the Head of Research in managing funded research projects, including PhD studentships and innovation grants, while overseeing progress reporting and impact evaluation. Responsibilities also include contributing to research strategy, coordinating grant calls, supporting funding decisions, maintaining research systems, and engaging with national and international research partners.

Key responsibilities:

  • Support the Head of Research in the management and delivery of Cancer Research Wales’ research portfolio and associated projects.
  • Help manage the selection and assessment processes to ensure selection of high-quality peer review of all grant applications.
  • Support Head of Research and the scientific committee to undertake initial internal assessment of grant applications and manage and develop a network of external assessors for the delivery of shortlisting.
  • Conduct interviews and site visits, where necessary, of all live research awards as part of active monitoring and good research governance processes.
  • Prepare and share progress updates and key learnings to the scientific committee, Board of Trustees, and other sub-committees and departments of Cancer Research Wales as required.
  • Undertake minute taking and administration of scientific committee meetings.
  • Support the Head of Research and the scientific committee to implement the Cancer Research Wales Research Strategy and work towards the development of more robust operating frameworks for commissioning and managing research.
  • Lead on the development and implementation of PPI into the Cancer Research Wales research portfolio where appropriate.
  • Lead on the capture, analysis and reporting of the outcomes and impact of Cancer Research Wales funded research through reporting systems such as Researchfish.
  • Develop novel and innovative research impact measurement tools.
  • Lead on the management and reporting of all funded PhD Studentships and Innovation Grants.
