Reports to: Health Improvement Manager

Hours: 24.5 hours per week (FTE 35 hours)

Location: 40-44 Eglantine Avenue, Belfast BT9 6DX

Remuneration: £32,643 - £34,666 (pro-rata)

Overall Purpose of Post

The Regional Skin Cancer Prevention Co-ordinator will lead on all aspects of Skin Cancer Prevention initiatives within Cancer Focus Northern Ireland. They will develop, deliver and evaluate training programmes relating to care in the sun messaging and skin cancer prevention and will actively promote the Be UV Aware message. They will manage the skin cancer prevention service staff and volunteers and will initiate, develop, disseminate and evaluate care in the sun resources and programmes targeting specific groups and settings, based on evaluation findings and regional priorities.

The postholder will support the CEO at a strategic level to inform policy and skin cancer prevention messaging and will organise, prepare and present Cancer Prevention regional and local events. They will also provide leadership, managerial, coordination and administrative support to all regional Skin Cancer Prevention Strategic groups and sub groups including:

  • The Skin Cancer Prevention Strategy Group responsible for the extended Department of Health and Social Services Skin Cancer Prevention Strategy and Action Plan 2011-2021.
  • The Strategy Implementation Sub-Groups Early detection, PR, Sun Behaviours, and Sunbed groups.

Key Responsibilities

Skin Cancer Prevention Strategy Implementation Groups

  • Provide Leadership And Facilitate The Skin Cancer Prevention Strategy Implementation Group And Its Subgroups, Ensuring There Is Clear Direction, Development Of Strategic And Operational Action Plans, And Ensuring Agreed Actions Are Taken Through The Following:
  • Organise the Regional Strategy Implementation Group
  • Support, administrate and carry out actions for each of the subgroups
  • Monitor and ensure progress on the strategy's six objectives
  • Facilitate multi-agency co-operation on care in the sun initiatives
  • Develop resources and programmes to target specific groups and settings
  • Develop and provide training programmes for professional and community groups
  • Lead on work with the media to disseminate the strategy's key messages
  • Ensure maintenance and development of care in the sun website
  • Lead on work to lobby for environmental change, e.g., provision of shade, availability of cheaper sunscreens, use of protective clothing and use of sun beds
  • Encourage policy development and implementation in a range of organisations and settings
  • Liaise with relevant local, regional, national and international organisations by building effective key stakeholder relationships
  • Ensure evaluation of materials and activities
  • Provide Interim and annual progress reports internally and to the Implementation Group and PHA

Management

  • Operationally line manage the Skin Cancer Prevention team member(s)
  • Provide training and supervision for the Skin Cancer Prevention volunteers
  • Ensure adequate support, supervision and staff wellbeing is prioritised for the Skin Cancer Prevention team and volunteers
  • Manage the budget, reporting and monitoring compliance for Skin Cancer Prevention services
  • Ensure that contract and funding requirements are met, including completion of reports, budgets and statistics

Promoting Healthy Public Policy

  • To integrate Skin Cancer Prevention work with existing relevant initiatives carried out by the other agencies and partnerships
  • To work with the Health Improvement Manager, Director of Services and CEO to advocate for healthy public policy
  • To work in partnership with other organisations in relation to skin cancer prevention messaging and awareness

General

  • To work as an integral member of the Cancer Focus NI multi-disciplinary team
  • To support service users, those living with cancer and their families
  • To represent and promote Cancer Focus NI and its objectives as required
  • To promote existing Cancer Focus NI services as appropriate
  • To carry out any other duties as may be required by Cancer Focus NI

Applicants will hold a full, current driving license and have access to the use of a car or some other appropriate form of transport to carry out the duties of the post. This post may require occasional evening or weekend work and will require an element of flexible working. This Job Description is not exhaustive. Qualifications

  • Essential Criteria
  • A Postgraduate Diploma in Health Promotion or equivalent
  • A minimum of three years health promotion practice

Experience

  • Experience of project management
  • Experience of developing and providing training sessions and programmes
  • Demonstrable experience in leading, motivating and coordinating a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of service evaluation and monitoring systems and procedures
  • Experience of facilitating groups

Skills & Knowledge

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire trust and enthusiasm and speak authoritatively on Skin Cancer Prevention and health issues
  • Skilled in the use of basic computer packages (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint)
  • Demonstrable ability to monitor and report on programmes
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Ability to work well on own and collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team
