JOB SUMMARY

The Associate Director – Health, Safety & Wellbeing is a senior leadership role responsible for providing strategic direction, operational oversight and continuous improvement of health, safety and wellbeing performance across the organisation and specifically Canary Wharf Contractors.
Operating with a high degree of autonomy, the role contributes to business-wide strategy, leads cross-functional initiatives, and ensures that robust systems, culture and behaviours are embedded across the estate. The role plays a key part in driving commercial, operational and cultural outcomes, ensuring alignment with CWG’s objectives, values and regulatory responsibilities
Annual Salary: circa £95k to £110k dependant on experience

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the development and implementation of the CWC Health, Safety & Wellbeing strategy
  • Ensure alignment with organisational priorities, operational objectives, and regulatory expectations
  • Anticipate future risks, trends and legislative changes, and integrate these into strategic planning
  • Lead and coordinate cross-functional activity to deliver consistent, high-quality HSW outcomes across CWC
  • Provide visible leadership to embed expectations, accountability and performance standards
  • Work collaboratively with senior stakeholders to ensure alignment and effective delivery
  • Champion and lead initiatives that deliver sustained improvements in safety performance and culture
  • Drive implementation of HSW change programmes across CWC, ensuring effective communication, engagement and delivery
  • Foster and maintain active day to day relationships with contractors’ staff, with a view to creating a co-operative working relationship
  • Establish and monitor performance metrics to evaluate effectiveness and inform decisions
  • Provide commercially informed advice on HSW risks, opportunities and investments
  • Ensure HSW considerations support efficient delivery of projects and operations
  • Contribute to business performance by balancing safety, risk management and operational effectiveness
  • Act as a subject matter expert in health, safety and wellbeing across CWC and CWG
  • Ensure the effective implementation and assurance of the ISO 45001 HSW management system
  • Maintain oversight of compliance with all relevant legislation and regulatory frameworks, including CDM.
  • Ensure all the client duties under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM Regulations) are discharged across CWC.
  • When Canary Wharf Contractors undertakes designer duties assist them in complying with the designer duties under the CDM Regulations.
  • Where Canary Wharf Contractors is the principal designer take all reasonable steps to ensure that the principal designer’s duties under the CDM Regulations are discharged.
  • Oversee incident management, notification and investigation to identify root causes and organisational learning processes
  • Develop and maintain high-quality relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including regulators and contractors
  • Influence behaviours and decision-making across all levels of the organisation
  • Represent CWG externally, promoting best practice and enhancing organisational reputation
  • Lead, develop and inspire the CWC Health, Safety & Wellbeing team
  • Build capability, succession and high performance within the function
  • Champion CWG’s values, culture and wellbeing agenda across the organisation
  • Attract and retain diverse, high-calibre talent
  • Provide clear, accurate and insight-led reporting to senior leadership
  • Ensure effective audit, assurance and governance arrangements are in place to drive improvement and ensure 45001 compliance.
  • Drive a culture of accountability, transparency and continuous improvement
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Managing Director (responsible for Health & Safety).

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • Degree, NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent professional qualification
  • Chartered membership of IOSH or IIRSM
  • Significant experience in leading health and safety within complex UK construction or operational environments
  • Experience operating at a senior level, influencing across functions and disciplines
  • Proven track record in delivering performance improvement and organisational change
  • Ability to contribute to strategic planning and translate vision into delivery
  • Proven ability to lead across functional boundaries and influence senior stakeholders
  • Ability to build trust, credibility and alignment across teams
  • Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks and industry best practice
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to adapt style to different audiences and build a strong professional presence
  • Ability to lead and embed change in complex environments
  • Drives innovation and performance improvements
