Reporting to the Manager: Digital and Data Engineering, the Senior Data Engineer will play a key role in building and operating CWG’s data engineering capability within the Technology Department. The role will specialise in Microsoft Fabric, designing and delivering scalable ETL and ELT pipelines that enable trusted, timely and well-governed data to be made available for reporting, analytics and business decision-making.
Working as part of a small Digital and Data Engineering team, the post holder will work closely with business stakeholders, Technology colleagues, data owners and external partners to translate requirements into robust data products and reusable engineering patterns. The role is both hands-on and business-facing, requiring strong technical delivery, clear communication and the ability to understand how data can support operational efficiency, improved insight and measurable business value.
The Senior Data Engineer will help shape the engineering standards, controls and delivery practices required to support CWG’s data roadmap. This includes ensuring data pipelines are secure, supportable, documented and aligned to agreed architecture, governance, privacy and information security requirements. The role will contribute directly to CWG’s ambition to become more data-driven by reducing manual reporting effort, improving data quality and enabling the business to make better decisions from trusted information.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design, build and maintain scalable ETL and ELT pipelines within Microsoft Fabric, ensuring data is ingested, transformed and made available in a reliable, secure and supportable way.
- Work with the Manager: Digital and Data Engineering to support the delivery of the data engineering roadmap, ensuring activity is aligned to Technology priorities and business value.
- Translate business reporting and analytics requirements into clear technical designs, data models and engineering deliverables that are scalable and reusable.
- Develop and maintain data pipelines, lakehouse structures, notebooks, dataflows, semantic models and related Fabric components in line with agreed standards.
- Ensure data engineering activity supports trusted Power BI reporting by improving data quality, consistency, availability, performance and traceability.
- Work closely with business stakeholders, data owners and analysts to understand data definitions, reporting logic and operational processes behind business requirements.
- Partner with Enterprise Platforms, Architecture, Information Security and Infrastructure teams to ensure data solutions align to CWG’s platform architecture, security standards and operating model.
- Apply appropriate governance, testing, version control, documentation and release controls across data engineering deliverables.
- Identify and manage risks relating to data quality, data privacy, reporting accuracy, pipeline resilience, access control and operational supportability, escalating where appropriate.
- Support the integration of data from key business platforms, SaaS applications, databases and external sources into CWG’s enterprise data environment.
- Work with suppliers and implementation partners where required, ensuring technical outputs are reviewed, challenged, documented and aligned to CWG standards.
- Contribute to engineering best practice, reusable patterns, technical standards and continuous improvement across the Digital and Data Engineering team.
- Provide technical guidance and knowledge sharing to colleagues, helping build internal capability and reducing reliance on external support over time.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
- Strong hands-on experience as a Data Engineer, with a proven track record of designing, building and supporting data pipelines in a business-critical environment.
- Practical experience with Microsoft Fabric, including lakehouses, warehouses, data pipelines, notebooks, dataflows, OneLake and integration with Power BI.
- Strong SQL skills and experience working with structured and semi-structured data from databases, APIs, SaaS platforms and file-based sources.
- Good understanding of ETL and ELT design patterns, data modelling, orchestration, scheduling, monitoring and performance optimisation.
- Experience supporting Power BI reporting through well-designed data models, semantic layers and trusted curated datasets.
- Good understanding of data governance, data quality, lineage, metadata, access control, data privacy and information security principles.
- Experience working in Microsoft Azure data environments, with an appreciation of cloud architecture, identity, security, networking and operational support considerations.
- Ability to engage with business stakeholders, understand operational requirements and explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.
- Structured and analytical approach to problem solving, with strong attention to detail and a focus on practical, supportable and scalable solutions.
- Experience working with third-party suppliers or delivery partners, including reviewing technical outputs and ensuring standards are met.
