The CDM Safety Manager will play a pivotal role in supporting Canary Wharf Construction (CWC) compliance with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015. The role ensures that health and safety risks are effectively managed across all phases of the building lifecycle, from planning and design to construction and occupation. This position is instrumental in promoting safe design, coordinated construction and integrated project delivery across a complex and high-profile estate. The role will include regular site visits to assess compliance, engage with project teams, and support safe delivery on the ground.

Salary range: Ā£70,000 – Ā£75,000 – dependent on experience.

Main Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary advisor on CDM compliance, ensuring the organisation fulfils its duties as a Client under CDM 2015.
  • Provide strategic health and safety input during early RIBA stages, embedding design risk management into project planning, including acting as Principal Designer on CWC’s smaller projects, when requested.
  • Influence and collaborate with internal project teams, designers, consultants, and contractors to promote safe and coordinated design outcomes.
  • Oversee the selection, appointment, and performance of Principal Designers and Principal Contractors, ensuring legal and procedural compliance.
  • Review and challenge key design safety documentation, including pre-construction information, design risk registers and coordination reports.
  • Support project teams across the planning, procurement, design development, and construction phases, ensuring CDM principles are applied consistently.
  • Monitor and manage consultant performance, ensuring outputs align with project safety goals and integrate with the wider safety management system.
  • Proactively identify and promote innovative and practical solutions to improve design coordination, construction safety, and long-term asset operation.
  • Conduct regular site visits to assess compliance, engage with delivery teams, and provide hands-on support during key project milestones. Carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by Senior Management.

Person Specification

  • Proven experience working on major construction projects.
  • Understanding of design and construction processes and procedures. Knowledge of CDM Regulations and RIBA Plan of Work.
  • Formal Health and Safety qualifications (e.g., NEBOSH General Certificate, NEBOSH Construction Certificate, NVQ Level 6 or equivalent); CSCS Card (Health & Safety Manager).
  • Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., APS, IOSH, IIRSM, CIOB).
  • Good communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Good influencing skills and ability to influence behaviour.
  • Team player able to work with project teams, design consultants and Health and Safety department members.
  • Ability to develop and implement CDM and Health and Safety performance improvement-related systems and procedures.
  • Willingness to undertake training and a personal development program.
  • Ability to train others where knowledge and skills allow.
  • Computer literate with Microsoft Office and good administrative skills.
