Overview
Area Planner (Midlands) – Permanent contract, 30 hours per week. Join the National Spatial Planning Team to protect Trust assets, guard heritage, and promote waterways as sustainable transport and recreation.
Working Hours & Location
The role is based working from home with a hub in Hatton (Warwick) or central Birmingham. Expect to travel across the West Midlands waterway network and occasionally further afield.
Role Overview
The post holder will manage a diverse, high-volume workload of planning consultations and policy matters in their geographic area.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage an effective, challenging workload.
- Complete tasks to a high standard within set timescales.
- Comply with the Trust’s standards and procedures.
- Adhere to the Health & Safety policy.
- Travel to site visits, meetings or other Trust offices as required.
Skills & Qualifications
We seek a qualified planning professional with significant experience of the development management process and planning policy matters.
Technical
- A chartered Town Planner (or eligible) with a relevant Masters, Diploma or Degree level qualification.
- Knowledge of the TCPA/DCO regimes, appeals and enforcement system in England and Wales.
- Sound knowledge of planning, heritage and environmental law and regulations.
- Understanding of Government reforms & policy objectives, planning policy, procedures & regulations in England & Wales.
- Appeal experience ideally including public inquiries as expert witness and informal hearings.
- Knowledge of the national planning policy framework, sub‑regional spatial plan and local and neighbourhood plan preparation and review processes including examinations.
- Ability to build effective working relationships with Local Planning Authorities, Town & Parish Councils and other statutory consultees.
- Political awareness, extensive experience in public, charity & private sector planning.
General
- Advanced negotiation, influencing, presentation, verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to interact with the public, customers and neighbours, including engaging in difficult conversations.
- Experience in the use of GIS based systems.
