Join Our Team: Workshop Joinery Apprentice

Start date: September 2026

Hours & Location: The role will be based from our Bradley workshop 5 days a week. The working hours of the workshop are 07:30 - 16:00 Monday to Thursday & 07:30 - 12:30.

Overview: You will work in our workshop carrying out maintenance and repair tasks under the guidance of our expert workshop team. You will learn how to work effectively as part of a team and contribute to the Trust's planned annual works. You will learn how to use specialist joinery techniques that support and enhance the Trust's canal and river.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the manufacture, repair and assembly of our large timber lock gates using traditional and modern joinery with hardwoods and other materials.
  • Cut, shape and prepare components following technical drawings and workshop machinery and hand tools safely and accurately to produce high-quality parts that meet Trust materials, required grades, dimensions and quality standards.
  • Carry out quality inspections on components and completed work efficiently as part of the production team to deliver gates to agreed timelines for installation across the waterway.
  • Promote inclusion and diversity across the Trust and challenge behaviours or decisions that conflict with the Trust's values and behaviours.

Development: You will work towards the Level 2 Carpentry & Joinery apprenticeship with one of our expert training providers. Whilst on-the-job, you will work with supportive colleagues to get the best out of your apprenticeship experience. The Canal & River Trust is committed to supporting apprentices to become experts in their field, offering structured development pathways and long-term career opportunities.

Qualifications: You don't need any prior experience - we will teach you everything you need. What matters is you have a genuine interest in practical hands-on work, enjoy solving problems and feel comfortable working both in a workshop environment and outside. Ideally, you have grade A-C or grade 9-4 in Maths and English GCSE (or equivalent) already achieved or on track to achieve.
