We are seeking a Communication Support Worker to support deaf and hearing‑impaired pupils in accessing the curriculum, initially with pupils in Year 7. Applicants should be good communicators, empathetic, creative, and passionate about education and maximising potential. They must be highly motivated and able to work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • The CSW is expected to be part of our Learning Coach team, working with individuals or small groups of pupils within mainstream lessons.
  • While interpreting is the primary role, the CSW may also provide other forms of communication support such as note‑taking, lip‑reading, and basic hearing equipment checks.
  • The CSW works alongside classroom teachers and the Learning Coach team.
  • The CSW must always present information in a form that is accessible to pupils.
  • Adaptation and modification of content, structure, and language during lessons may be required based on the pupil’s needs, including:
    • Sign language skills
    • Ability to take in new information
    • Level of language
    • Subject‑specific vocabulary (pre‑learning and over‑learning)
    • Small group interventions
  • The CSW should pass on the information provided by the teacher without altering content without agreement.
  • The CSW may omit extraneous information where judged unnecessary, but technical vocabulary and relevant subject details must be retained.
