Campden BRI, our Processing Innovation Team supports our members and clients with consultancy, project work and training activities in the thermal processing area, including process development, validation and optimisation. This encompasses heating (e.g. cooking, pasteurisation and sterilisation) and cooling (chilling and freezing) processes.
Due to the work they do there is an exciting travel element to this role - UK, Europe and Globally! Expenses paid work trips across the globe, recent trips include Turkey, Iceland, Jamaica, South Africa, Italy and Spain. You will be working in a range of different food & drink manufacturing sectors, growing your skills and knowledge!
The work of the Group is firmly rooted in the application of sound science and engineering principles to the solution of food industry problems. The route to delivering this is through a blend of longer-term research activities and short-term contract support for companies. In addition, there is a significant training and knowledge transfer activity aimed at facilitating the application of best practice within the food manufacturing sector.
The Group has facilities for traditional thermal processing (including heating and cooling operations), as well as a selection of more innovative technologies, supporting areas such as product development and food packaging.
You will provide thermal process authority support to Campden BRI clients in the form of technical project work, validation solutions and the delivery of training to clients. You will play a leading role in the development of new business within the team. You will lead a team of process technologists (3-4 direct reports), in the delivery of scientific and technical projects, particularly focused on delivery of the thermal process validation services.
Position
- Management & oversight of the thermal validation service, ensuring quality of work, planning of resource and maintenance of equipment (e.g. repairs & calibration).
- Managing own project work activities to meet project deadlines. These will be the more technical validation and/or consultancy projects, some of which will involve travel to client sites in the UK and abroad.
- Design and provision of training courses and presentations on external/internal training courses, seminars and symposia.
- Proposing and delivering funded research, around thermal and non-thermal processing technologies.
- Development of the technical and professional skills of staff reports (3-4 G2/3 level staff).
- Responsible for the business development of research and contract work building client relationships, preparing/reviewing quotes.
- Responding to direct technical enquiries and requests for processing advice.
Requirements
- Degree or equivalent in chemical engineering, science or food technology.
- A fundamental awareness of the importance of heat processing in the food industry.
- Proven experience working in a food production related setting. Experience of working within a specific processing areas such UHT, pasteurisation, or retort processing is advantageous.
- Experience of and/or enthusiasm for, people management and development.
- Proven business development skills, with the potential and desire to develop these further.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills (client meetings, emails, reports).
- Time management and financial awareness to facilitate effective project management.
- Full UK/EU driving licence and eligibility to live/work in the UK. Ability to travel within the UK and beyond.
- Computer literate: MS Office (particularly Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
