Applied Scientist – 12‑Month Student Placement

Location & Working Arrangements
- Lisburn, Northern Ireland
- Hybrid – 3+ days on‑site
What to Expect
During the placement you will work closely with experienced scientists and engineers on projects such as Dissolved Gas Analysis for high‑voltage asset monitoring, gas sensors for biogas/biomethane applications, and data‑driven processes. Expect hands‑on laboratory work, data analysis, experimental design, and process improvement initiatives.
Example Projects & Responsibilities
- Support research efforts for new technologies.
- Design and build systems to accelerate experimentation.
- Extract performance statistics and automate data visualization.
- Build databases and improve data utilisation from the DGA lab.
What We’re Looking For
We’re seeking a curious, proactive, and motivated student eager to learn and contribute to applied science and technology.
Essential Criteria
- Currently studying for a Bachelor’s or Master’s in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or a related discipline.
- Strong problem‑solving ability and logical troubleshooting.
- Analytical mindset, interested in data analysis and root cause analysis.
- Enthusiastic about hands‑on experimentation and willing to perform tests.
- Collaborative teamwork skills.
- Continuous improvement mindset, streamlining workflows and automating processes.
- Attention to detail and organised lab work.
- Effective communication with internal teams.
- Proactive learning and identifying technical trends.
- Flexibility and adaptability to a variety of tasks.
Nice to Have (Not Essential)
- Previous lab experience, university projects, or internships in Engineering, Physics, or Chemistry.
- Basic knowledge of gas sensing, spectroscopy or sensor technologies.
- Familiarity with Python or similar for data automation and analysis.
- Experience on technical experimentation, prototyping or testing.
