The Financial Controller will take ownership of the day-to-day finance function, leading a small team, and will act as a key advisor to the Managing Director on financial performance, cash flow, and commercial decision-making across the business. This is a hands-on role suited to someone who wants to be close to the detail while also contributing at a strategic level as the company grows.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES- Manage and mentor a finance team of 3, overseeing day-to-day transactional finance, purchase/sales ledger, and payroll
- Produce timely and accurate monthly management accounts, including P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow reporting
- Own the budgeting and forecasting process, working closely with the MD and project/site teams
- Manage CIS compliance, including subcontractor verification, deductions, and monthly returns
- Oversee VAT, payroll, and all statutory reporting and compliance
- Manage job costing and project profitability reporting across live contracts, working closely with the commercial team
- Maintain robust cash flow forecasting and working capital management appropriate to the project-based nature of construction
- Manage relationships with the company’s bank, auditors, HMRC, and other external stakeholders
- Support the year-end audit process and liaise with external accountants
- Continuously improve financial processes, systems, and controls as the business scales
- Provide commercial insight and financial analysis to support tendering, contract negotiation, and business decision-making
- Construction industry background is essential — candidates without direct construction sector experience will not be considered
- Strong working knowledge of the CIS and its practical application
- Proven experience managing month-end close, management accounts, and reporting within a construction or contracting environment
- Experience with job/contract costing and understanding project-based revenue recognition
- Experience managing or mentoring a small finance team
- Strong Excel skills; experience with construction-specific accounting software advantageous (e.g. Sage, COINS, Eque2, or similar)
- Qualified (ACA / ACCA / CIMA), or exceptional QBE candidates considered
- Hands-on and comfortable operating at both transactional and strategic levels
- Confident communicator, able to work closely with the Managing Director and non-finance stakeholders (site/commercial teams)
- Commercially minded, with genuine interest in the operational side of the business, not just the numbers
